Senior Katie Hooper Ties School Record for Career Doubles (45)
LONG BEACH, Calif. -- Senior Katie Hooper tied the school record with her 45th career double, but the CSUN softball team (20-13, 0-2 Big West) lost 3-1 and 2-1 to Long Beach State Saturday afternoon in a Big West Conference doubleheader at the LBSU Softball Complex. Fellow senior Taylor Glover had an RBI in each game and stole the 84th base of her career, but the Matador offense was stagnant for much of the day in the two losses.
Game One Recap
The first game Saturday was a tough one for CSUN. The Matadors could not solve Long Beach State's Christina Clermont, who scattered four hits with a walk to post the victory. On a day when the wind was blowing in at the LBSU Softball Complex, Clermont recorded 14 fly-ball outs and kept the Matadors from making solid contact for most of the game.
Mackenzie Babbitt had two hits and scored CSUN's only run of the game. She led off the third with a single, moved to second on a base hit from Karlie Habitz and then to third on a sac bunt from Tara Kliebenstein. She then scored on Taylor Glover's sac fly to center.
In the circle, Daphne Pofek (9-4) had a tough outing and allowed three earned runs, five hits and two walks in 2.0 innings of work. The 49ers struck for a pair of runs in the first inning and added a third in the third to chase her from the circle. Taylor Troost tossed the final 4.0 innings and allowed three hits.
Jessica Alexander had the Matadors' fourth hit of the game and Taylor Nate drew a walk to extend her streak to 25-straight games reaching safely.
Game Two Recap
CSUN had several chances to tie the game, but ultimately fell 2-1 to Long Beach State in game two Saturday. The Matadors managed six hits, including doubles from Nate, Hooper, Horvath and Alejandra Rascon, and Glover and Horvath each had a stolen base.
The 49ers struck for a run in the second off Troost (8-5) and added a second run in the third. Troost allowed four hits and two earned runs in 2.1 innings of work. Rebecca Bell tossed the final 3.2 innings and allowed three hits and a walk.
The Matadors cut the lead to 2-1 in the fifth as Nate hit a two-out double and then scored on a single from Glover. Nate has now reached safely in 26-straight games for CSUN. In both the sixth and seventh, CSUN cracked a lead-off double but could not push the run across to tie the game.
The Matadors and 49ers will play the series finale on Sunday, April 2 with first pitch slated for 1 p.m. from the LBSU Softball Complex.
