LONG BEACH, Calif. --- Taylor Troost tossed a two-hit complete game and the Matadors produced 11 hits, including three doubles and a triple, as the CSUN softball team (21-13, 1-2 Big West) defeated Long Beach State 10-1 Sunday afternoon in the finale of a Big West Conference series at the LBSU Softball Complex. Savannah Horvath, Mackenzie Babbitt and Jessica Alexander each had two hits while Horvath, Tara Kliebenstein and Alejandra Rascon each had two RBIs.
After suffering a pair of tough losses Saturday, the Matadors erupted in Sunday's finale to salvage a game in the series. Taylor Glover, Horvath and Kliebenstien had doubles while Katie Hooper produced a triple to give her seven for her career and tie her for seventh in school history. For Glover, the double was the 37th of her career, moving her into third in school history, while Horvath moved into seventh in school history with 33 career two-baggers.
Alexander tied a career high with three runs scored and finished 2-for-4 with an RBI. Horvath finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a stolen base, her 10th of the season and 47th of her CSUN career. Babbitt was 2-for-3 with with a run scored, an RBI, a walk and a stolen base.
Troost (9-5) was tough in the circle all game. She scattered just two hits and two walks to go with three strikeouts in the complete-game performance. For the season, she is 9-5 with a 2.15 ERA, 50 Ks and a .202 opponent batting average in 84.2 innings of work.
The Matadors struck early, scoring three runs in the top of the first. Taylor Nate started the game by reaching on an error, moving to second on an out and then stole third. She came in on an RBI single from Alexander and after Hooper walked and Madison Fleming singled to load the bases, Horvath drove a double down the left field line to give CSUN a 3-0 advantage.
After the 49ers pulled one back in the bottom of the third, Hooper laced a two-out triple to score Alexander in the top of the fifth. CSUN kept the advantage thanks to some stellar work in the infield. Kliebenstein helped start a pair of double plays, getting two outs on one play in the third and the fifth.
In the seventh, CSUN scored six runs to put the game out of reach. Alexander started the frame with a single, Hooper walked for the third time and Fleming drew a walk to load the bases with no outs. With one out, Babbitt was hit by a pitch to earn an RBI and Rascon laced a single through the right side to score two more. Kliebenstein then cleared the bases with a screaming double to center and she then came into score on Glover's two-bagger.
CSUN returns home next weekend to host Hawai'i in a Big West Conference series at Matador Diamond. The teams will play a single game on Friday, April 7 and a doubleheader on Saturday, April 8.
