Highly Decorated Group of Matador Seniors Celebrated in Final Home Match
En español
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN women's tennis team (9-11, 3-5 BWC) lost 4-0 to Cal State Fullerton Saturday afternoon in a Big West Conference match at Matador Tennis Complex. Despite the defeat, the Matadors celebrated the final home match for a four-member senior class: Mickey Hsu, Kristen Poei, Vivian Lin and Samantha Judan.Â
In action Saturday, the Titans captured the doubles point with victories in the first and third draw. In singles action, Cal State Fullerton won at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 to earn the victory. Arpe Bagumyan, Hsu and Poei all played in matches that were not finished. The teams are likely to face each other in a Big West Tournament Quarterfinal on April 28 in Indian Wells, CA.Â
Still, Saturday will be remembered more for the senior class playing in its final home match at Matador Tennis Complex. Hsu and Poei have more wins as a doubles team (50) than any team in school history and are two-time First Team All-Big West doubles honorees.
Hsu has earned consecutive First Team All-Big West honors for her work in singles play and also received Second Team All-Big West honors as a freshman. Poei has enjoyed a stellar senior season in which she leads the team with 11 singles wins. She is 47-25 (.652) in her CSUN singles career, her 47 wins ranking 11th in school history, while Hsu is 39-33 (.542).Â
Lin is a three-time Honorable Mention All-Big West performer in doubles play, doing so with a different partner in her first three seasons. As a freshman, she teamed with Criss Rodriguez to go 9-8 overall and 8-7 in the top draw. As a sophomore she worked with Kiryang Kim and the duo clinched the doubles point in CSUN's Big West Tournament Semifinal match with Long Beach State and recorded notable victories over UC Riverside, Cal State Fullerton and Dartmouth.Â
Last season she teamed with Skyla Alcon. Then a junior-freshman tandem, they finished the year with an 11-9 overall record and a 4-3 mark against Big West opposition and posted notable victories over Saint Mary's, UC Riverside, Colorado State, Western Michigan, UC Santa Barbara twice and UC Davis.Â
Judan has been a part of the program for the last three years, playing in 2015 and 2017 for the Matadors. This season, she teamed in doubles with Elisaveta Nosenko to post a victory in No. 3 doubles in the season opener against Westmont.Â
Although CSUN is done until the tournament, several Big West matches remain to be played for final seeding to be determined. The Big West Tournament starts on Thursday, April 27 and runs through Saturday, April 30 when the Tournament Championship is played for a berth in the NCAA Tournament.Â
