NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- CSUN women's tennis (12-6, 3-3 Big West) secured a 4-3 victory over Long Beach State (11-10, 4-4 Big West) in a tightly contested conference match Friday afternoon at the Matador Tennis Complex. In a 3-3 game, Emma Moratalla Sanz clinched the victory with a win at Court No. 2. Satsuki Ishikawa and Sandra Isabela Arguelles both had singles wins as well.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
Â
CSUN opened the match by taking two of three doubles contests. The tandem of Angela Ho and Nicole West defeated Long Beach State's Cecilia Costa and Paulina Franco, 6-3, while Moratalla Sanz and Arguelles earned a 7-5 win over Thea Jagare and Pamela Badillo to clinch the doubles point.
Â
In singles play, both teams traded blows across all six courts. Ishikawa gave CSUN an early advantage with a dominant 6-1, 6-1 win over Paulina Franco at Court No. 4. The freshman from Japan has begun her collegiate career on a 10 game winning streak.Â
Â
"We were able to go into the singles matches with great energy thanks to the wins during doubles," said Ishikawa. "I'd like to thank all my teammates and coaches who supported me leading up to today's match. Also, I would like to thank the members from other sports that came to cheer us on. The cheers helped give us some extra strength. I'm very happy with this victory."
Â
Long Beach State responded with its first win of the day as Costa topped Ho, 7-6 (7-2), 6-2, at Court No. 1. The scoreboard now read 2-1 in favor of the Matadors.
Â
Arguelles delivered a key point for CSUN at the No. 6 position, defeating Daisy Carpenter, 6-4, 6-2 to give CSUN a 3-1 lead. "I'm beyond happy with today's results!" Arguelles said. "Today was an incredible day for the team. We all gave it 100 percent and our performance was top notch. It makes me happy to see all the support we got from the other teams, the energy was just amazing. I am so proud."
Â
The clinching point came down to Moratalla Sanz. She delivered a three-set, back and forth victory over Diana De Simone, 6-3, 2-6, 6-1.
Â
"Big match Emma - we have called her that for four years." Head coach Gary Victor said. "No one would ever want to be in that position more than Emma." The senior from Valencia, Spain is now 14-3 in singles play on the season.
Â
"Today we came into this match with the mentality of playing for every point." Moratalla Sanz said. "When it came down to the third set, I knew I had to give it my all. We can do big things when we believe in each other." She concluded.
Â
The duel ended with a Jagare victory over West, 4-6, 6-2, 6-2, but it was too little, too late for the Beach.
Â
NOTES OF THE GAME
"First, I'd like to say a humongous thank you to our women's soccer, men's soccer, men's volleyball and women's basketball teams for coming out and bringing the Matador Love! Our team felt an unbelievable sense of community today and I think that put us in an excellent headspace. Our freshmen have grown so much since they arrived in January. Sandy [Arguelles] has been patient and is now making the most of her opportunity. She and Satsuki are two of the best people you could ever have on a team, and they have learned so much from our upperclassmen. When it comes to Satsuki, she has been a breath of fresh air in every way. There is no ego, just a great attitude, and a team that loves her.
