Â
Angela Ho, Emma Moratalla Sanz, Nicole West, Satsuki Ishikawa and Sandra Isabela Arguelles all earned singles victories for the Matadors. The Matadors rebounded from dropping the doubles point by winning five of six singles matches to secure the conference win over the Tritons.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
UC San Diego claimed the early advantage with wins at Court No. 1 and Court No. 2, as Olivia Allegre and Julia Visaya defeated Ho and West, 6-4, while Carling Allaye-Chan and Hana Gamracy topped Moratalla Sanz and Arguelles, 6-3.
Â
CSUN could have easily rolled over after the doubles defeat, but the Matadors stormed back in singles play. Ishikawa evened the match with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Julia Visaya at Court No. 4. The freshman from Japan is now 11-0 to start her collegiate career. Arguelles followed with a 6-3, 6-4 victory against Kamya Nair at No. 6.
Â
West extended the CSUN lead to 3-1, as she defeated Hana Gamracy, 6-4, 4-6, 6-1, at Court No. 3. "After a slow start today, the team really rallied together for a great team win." West said. "A lot of comeback wins in singles shows the team's grit and belief. We are excited for our last two conference matches!"
Â
Ho was the clinching point for the Matadors. She lost the first set and was down 4-0 in the second set, but she came back to win over Olivia Allegre, 2-6, 7-5, 6-3. Ho snapped a two game singles losing streak in the process.Â
Â
"Today was an absolute battle. We had a tough start losing the doubles point but still believed we could win," said Ho. "I was down the second set 0-4 and I lost the first set but still believed that I could come back and win. With the support of the coaches and my teammates, I was able to fight back and win the second. Then, I was able to get ahead in the third set and close it out. Overall, it was a really great day for the team and I'm so proud of them."
Â
Moratalla Sanz capped off the team victory for CSUN with another three-set comeback, defeating Carling Allaye-Chan, 1-6, 7-5, 6-4, at Court No. 2. The senior from Valencia, Spain dropped the first set and was down 4-1 in the second set and came back to get the win.
Â
"I felt like today we started a little bit off in doubles play." Moratalla Sanz said. "However, in singles we got that energy back regardless of the score. We showed resilience and that is how we got the win."
Â
UC San Diego picked up its lone singles point at Court No. 5, in a close battle as well where Allison Lian narrowly defeated Tallia Harper, 2-6, 7-6 (7-2), 10-5.
Â
NOTES OF THE GAME
"We came out a little flat against a very good team. They have lost 4-3 against the best teams in our conference and they have a ton of talent. Our toughness and resilience is really special. This was an incredible college tennis match."
