Matadors and Mustangs Meet for Three-Game Big West Series

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN softball team (25-15, 5-4 Big West) begins its final homestand of the 2017 season with a three-game Big West Conference against Cal Poly at Matador Diamond. The Matadors and Mustangs play a doubleheader on Saturday, April 22 beginning at 1 p.m. and a single game on Sunday, April 23 also beginning at 1 p.m. Sunday's contest is Pediatric Cancer Awareness Day and all fans wearing gold will receive free admission to the contest. After Sunday's game, a free clinic for grade school children will be held with the Matadors and CSUN coaching staff leading the drills. Last week, CSUN suffered a tough road series loss to UC Santa Barbara. The Gaucho pitching staff posted a pair of shutouts against the Matadors, the first time CSUN had been shutout since the second weekend of the season.Â
In game two, CSUN did erupt for a 6-1 victory in which freshman Jessica Alexander tied a career high with two home runs. Mackenzie Babbitt added a career-high three hits in the win and Taylor Glover ended the weekend with a .750 batting average. In the circle. Taylor Troost earned her 10th win of the season with some solid relief work.Â
This weekend, the Matadors return home for their final seven games at Matador Diamond. The Cal Poly Mustangs carry a 28-13 overall record and 4-5 mark in Big West play.Â
In the circle, Sierra Hyland leads the Big West Conference in multiple pitching categories and recently became the league's all-time strikeout queen. She is 17-8 with a 0.90 ERA and 206 Ks in 178.2 innings. Her teammate Lindsay Chalmers is 10-5 on the season with a 1.39 ERA and 101 Ks in 90.1 innings of work. Opponents have batted just .182 off Cal Poly pitching this season.Â

The CSUN softball team's doubleheader at Cal State Fullerton on Saturday, May 6 will be broadcast by the Big West Conference on ESPN3.
