Savannah Horvath Becomes Hits 30th Career Home Run
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. --- The CSUN Softball team (26-16, 6-5 Big West) split a Big West Conference doubleheader with Cal Poly at Matador Diamond Saturday, posting a 4-3 victory in game one before falling 2-0 in game two. In game one, Savannah Horvath hit a three-run home run, her eighth of the season and 30th of her career, and Taylor Troost nailed down her league-leading third save of the season. in game two, Horvath and Katie Hooper each had two hits, but the Matadors could not push a run across against Lindsey Chalmers.Â
In game one, Horvath launched a two-out, three-run home run over the fence in right center in the bottom of the first. That came on the heels of a two-out RBI single from Madison Fleming that scored Taylor Glover after Katie Hooper was intentionally walked.
For Glover, the run was the 157th of her career, moving her into third outright in Big West Conference history. She added her 20th stolen base of the season and 89th of her career in the win and is now batting .423 with 30 runs, nine doubles and 34 RBIs.Â
Horvath became just the sixth player in program history to reach 30 career home runs and is now alone in sixth in program history. She is batting .319 with a team-high 10 doubles, eight home runs and 29 RBIs. She also moved into a tie for fourth in program history with 36 career doubles.Â
In the circle, Daphne Pofek (12-6) earned the victory with 5.1 innings of work. She allowed three runs, although just one was earned, with no walks and a strikeout.
In the sixth, the Mustangs mounted a rally but were ultimately held off by CSUN pitching. With one out, the Mustangs loaded the bases and trailed 4-3 after chasing Pofek from the circle and getting a single and walk off Troost. However, the sophomore then induced a foul out and a fielder's choice to leave the tying run on third.Â
In game two, Hooper and Horvath each had two hits and Tara Kliebenstein and Mackenzie Babbitt added a stolen base, but the Matadors were shut out for the third time in their last five games.
CSUN had its chances against Chalmers, but could not capitalize on the opportunities. The Matadors loaded the bases in the second with two outs, but the threat ended with a strikeout. Horvath led off the bottom of the seventh with a double, but she was stranded on third when the game ended.Â
In the circle, Troost (10-6) started the game and lasted 3.2 innings. The two runs Cal Poly scored were both unearned as a CSUN error in the fourth allowed the Mustangs to send extra batters to the plate. Rebecca Bell tossed the final 3.1 innings and allowed two hits.Â
The teams will play for the series victory Sunday with a single game at Matador Diamond beginning at 1 p.m. Fans wearing gold will receive free admission and there will be a free post-game clinic for children 13 and younger led by the Matadors and CSUN coaching staff.Â
