NORTHRIDGE, CA - The CSUN beach volleyball team suffered a pair of close losses Friday and were eliminated from the 2017 Big West Tournament at Pismo Beach.
The Matadors, seeded fourth, opened the tournament with a tight 3-2 loss to fifth-seed Sacramento State before falling 5-0 to third-seed Cal Poly in an elimination match.
In the morning match against the Hornets, CSUN picked up wins in the No. 1 and No. 3 matches but lost at No. 2, No. 4 and No. 5 which proved to be the final margin.
Julie Haake and Katie Sato pulled out a three set win in the No. 1 pair as the CSUN duo came back to win the final two sets to defeat Alexis Skalbeck and Brie Gathright 18-21, 21-19, 15-8. The other Matador win came from Aeryn Owens and Erin Indermill who swept Kennedy Kurtz and Sarah Davis by the score of 21-10, 21-16.
The three other matches went to Sacramento State with the Matadors' Kristey Markle and Autumn Russell battled in the No. 4 match before falling in three tough sets (22-20, 17-21, 15-11).
The Hornets swept the No. 2 match over Maddie Leiphardt and Nickeisha Williams (21-15, 21-15) and the No. 5 match over Nico Stork and Nicolette Pinkney (21-15, 22-20).
In an elimination match Friday afternoon, CSUN was blanked by Cal Poly as a trio of three-set decisions went to the Mustangs which proved to be the difference.
Both Haake and Sato at No. 1 and Stork and Pinkney at No. 5 fell by the score of 16-14 in the decisive third set. Owens and Indermill also came up just short in the No. 3 match, falling by the score of 15-13 in the third.
Cal Poly won 21-6, 21-12 at No. 2 and 21-14, 21-16 at No. 4.
