Matadors Hand Spartans A 2-1 Defeat

For the fifth time in six matches this season, CSUN played to a 2-1 decision, winning for the fourth time against San José State
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—For the fifth time in six matches in the 2017 season, the CSUN men's soccer team played to a 2-1 decision Thursday night. For the fourth time, the Matadors came away with the victory as CSUN handed San José State a 2-1 defeat on the Matador Soccer Field pitch.
CSUN struck early as Michael Flores put the Matadors up 1-0 in the seventh minute. Giovanni Aguilar sent a pass ahead to Jeremy Degraffenreidt who in turn sent a long cross over to Flores. The Mt. SAC transfer sent the ball from the left side past Spartans' goalie Alex Clewis on the lower right side.
"We knew we had to attack fast against this team," said CSUN head coach Terry Davila. "That quick attack got us that early goal."
The Matadors increased the lead in the 68th minute. CSUN was fouled, creating a set piece opportunity for the Matadors. Jumoke Hutton took the indirect kick, sending the ball towards the San José State goal. Emmanuel Usen Jr. head the ball in four his team leading fourth-goal.
"Hutton was disappointed in his service against in New Mexico," Davila commented. "So, he worked on that this week. Half a set piece is the service and his service was perfect. E-man (Usen) finished off a great service with a great header and it was an impressive 2-0 goal."
The Spartans scored in the 79th minute. San José State was fouled, creating a set piece opportunity for themselves. Max Allen sent the ball towards the goal off the indirect. The ball bounced off a CSUN player in front and found the foot of Jeremy Romero who scored his fourth goal of the season.
"They were aggressive with their lines and we backed up," Davila said. "They got behind us and we fouled. They capitalized on a beautiful set piece themselves. We should have cleared it, but they got the ball and the goal."
The Spartans continued to press, earning two corner kicks in the final minute of play. The Matadors fended off the attacks to earn the victory. San José State outshot CSUN 11-9, but each team put five shots on goal. Matador goalie Henrik Regitnig made four saves while Clewis came away with three. The teams combined for 36 fouls (19-17 in favor of the Spartans) and six yellow cards (three on each team).
"The game was a bit chippy," Davila said. "We lost some rhythm during the game with injuries and the stoppage by the referee (when he had difficulty with his earpiece). I saw some improvements in our offense. We need to stay to the tactical plan a little bit better and hopefully we can play better against Grand Canyon."
CSUN faces GCU Sunday night. Coverage on the WAC Digital Network begins at 7 p.m. Grand Canyon improved to 2-4 on the year with a 5-4 shootout victory over UC Riverside Thursday night. The 'Lopes are in their first season of full Division I eligibility after transitioning from the Division II ranks.
"Grand Canyon won't have a fear of us," Davila said. "They have the number-three schedule in the nation. They will be ready. We are excited about the opportunity to play a such a good team in a great atmosphere."
