9/17/2017 9:44:00 PM | Men's Soccer
Papi Diouf scored in the 83rd minute to break a tie as CSUN defeated Grand Canyon 4-2 Sunday night.
The 'Lopes (2-4) broke the seal 3:40 into the match. CSUN was whistled for a foul, setting up a free kick. Josh Drack took a shot on goal. Matador goalie Henrik Regitnig made the save. The ball bounced out in front where Aiden McGlothan took the bounce and sent it past Regitnig for the goal.
CSUN tied the score 2:04 later. Jumoke Hutton had a throw in on the left side of the field. Hutton's toss was deep enough into the box which allowed Emmanuel Usen Jr. to head the ball past GCU goalie Jeremy Pollard for his fifth of the season.
The teams exchanged shots on goal that the respective goalies charted saves on in the 25th minute. CSUN regain possession with Usen Jr. earning an attempt that would go off the 'Lopes' post. The Matadors could not take advantage of the ensuing corning kick as GCU regained possession.
A Michael Flores' attempt in the 33rd minute went wide to tie the first half shot total at four for each team. Andy Alanis came off the bench to record a header that went high towards the CSUN net in the 37th minute.
The Matadors took the lead with 54 seconds remaining in the first half. The Matadors went on the offensive attack. Jordan Kinoshi sent a long ball towards Nicholas Grinde. Grinde stayed onside, took the pass and sent it low and to the left of Pollard for the lead.
Much like the first half, Grand Canyon scored quickly in the second. Marco Afonso sent a cross that caught CSUN on its heels. The pass found its way into the box for Musa Morris-Demos who connected from in front of the Matadors' goal. Damian German was also credited with an assist on the play.
A Giovanni Aguilar attempt was knocked out of bounds off a GCU player, resulting in a corner for CSUN. The ball again went out off a 'Lope player. The Matadors took a second corner that was knocked away by the Grand Canyon defense.
The 'Lopes went down a man in the 56th minute. GCU's Jordan Slack was issued a red card for a dangerous tackle of Daniel Trejo. Grand Canyon was still able to attack despite playing at a disadvantage. Jackson Jella's shot was blocked and would earn GCU a corner. The 'Lopes played set piece in where Charlie Kealling's header was saved by Regitnig. The ball would end up on the foot of Grand Canyon's Marco Alfonso who went wide left.
CSUN threatened with 12 minutes to play when Jeremy Degraffenreidt had an attempt from just inside the 18 saved by Pollard. Jellah was just wide left after earning a shot off a corner kick in the 80th minute. CSUN used a counterattack to free Trejo for a look at Pollard from 22 yards out. Pollard's diving save kept the score 2-2.
Papi Diouf finally broke the tie at the 82:25 mark. Usen's low cross was tapped in by Diouf from eight yards out. Trejo scored an insurance goal in the 85th minute off a short breakaway to make it the final 4-2. Aguilar earned the assist on the goal.
"We played against a school that cares about soccer," said CSUN head coach Terry Davila. "It was a great opportunity to play a team that caused us a lot of problems tactically."
Both teams recorded 12 shots, but CSUN had two more shots on goal (7-5). Each goalie made three saves. The Matadors (5-2) head to the University of San Diego (3-3-1) Thursday night. The match is set to begin at 7 p.m. and will be streamed on TheW.tv.
