New Mexico leads the all-time series against CSUN 12-4-1. The Lobos have won three in a row dating back to Sept. 15, 2013 when the Matadors defeated New Mexico 3-2 in Albuquerque.
Â
The tournament concludes Sunday when CSUN faces nationally-ranked Denver. Kickoff is set for 11:30 a.m. with coverage available on GoLobos.com. After reaching No. 4, the Pioneers were upset last Friday by Furman (1-0) at home. Denver (3-1) bounced back with a 2-0 victory over Drake on Sunday in Denver.Â
Â
The Pioneers are currently ranked in the following polls;Â College Soccer News (8), United Soccer Coaches (9), Soccer America (13), and Top Drawer Soccer (15). Graham Smith and Andre Shinyashiki have both scored twice for the Pioneers. Shinyashiki has taken 11 shots (eight on goal), twice as many as any other Denver player. Â
CSUN swept the weekly Big West Men's Soccer honors the conference announced Sept. 4. Junior forward Jordan Kinoshi notched the Big West Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week award as his goal defeated a nationally-ranked opponent.
Â
The Matadors defeated No. 14 Utah Valley, 2-1, with both goals coming in the first 16 minutes of the match. Kinoshi provided the second – and eventual game-winning – goal at the 16:22 mark. He took a free kick from just outside of the 18 and buried it to the top left of the Wolverine net for a 2-0 lead. Kinoshi set up the opportunity as he got fouled by a UVU defender preceding the kick. It was his only shot of the match.
Â
Junior goalie Henrik Regitnig made five saves at Utah Valley, garnering Big West Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week honors. Regitnig was key in helping the Matadors record the Big West's first win over a ranked foe this season as he stopped five of the six shots the Wolverines put on frame. Regitnig held strong throughout the match as Utah Valley outshot CSUN 12-4.
Â
The Matadors' victory was the first by CSUN over a nationally ranked opponent since Nov. 1, 2014 when the Matadors defeated then No. 14 UC Irvine 2-0.
