Papi Diouf scored the lone CSUN Goal On A PK
ALBUQUERQUE, N.M.—New Mexico scored a pair of goals in a three-minute span in the second half as the Lobos defeated CSUN in the first match of the Grange and Ashwill Invitational Friday night.
The Lobos threatened in the 13th minute as Devin Boyce sent a cross into the box for Ingi Jonsson. Jonsson sent a header towards the CSUN net that was just high. The Lobos limited the Matadors for the first 25 minutes. The first CSUN shot came at the 25:33 mark when Emmanuel Usen, Jr. received a pass from Alex Lara after a throw in. Usen, Jr.'s attempt went wide left.
The Matadors nearly took advantage of a New Mexico turnover in the 30th minute. The Lobos sent the ball back to their goalie, Jason Beaulieu. The ball bounced off of Beaulieu in front to Michael Flores. After one dribble, Flores sent a blast toward the UNM net. Beaulieu recovered and made the save. CSUN goalie Henrik Regitnig kept the Lobos at bay in the 38th minute when he made a save of a Simon Spangenberg shot from the top of the box.
The Matadors earned their first corner of the match two minutes into the second half. Going short, CSUN worked the ball to Usen, Jr. who took an attempt from just outside the 18. The shot went wide right. The Matadors earned a second corner, two minutes later, but the Lobos pushed the ball back out. Daniel Trejo regained possession. His attempt went high. Trejo's second attempt of the night in the 53rd minute was blocked.
CSUN continued to press the action, resulting in an offensive attack that saw Julio Rubio's shot go off the New Mexico post in the 61st. The Lobos returned the favor when Sam Gleadle's header was blocked a little over two minutes later. UNM broke the seal on Vedamankiam's tally at 65:57. Aaron Herrera set the goal up with a pass via the right wing for the goal. The Lobos made it 2-0 three minutes later. Herrera's shot was saved by Regitnig, but the ball bounced out in front for Alex Vial who scored.
The Matadors drew a foul inside the goalkeeper's box. CSUN was awarded a penalty kick which Papi Diouf took. Diouf's attempt at the 74:02 mark was good, cutting the Lobo lead in half. On the ensuing Matador possession, Jordan Kinoshi dribbled into the three-yard mark where he had an attempt saved by Beaulieu. CSUN was able to again get within 20 yards of the UNM net when the Matadors took their next possession. Michael Flores' shot went wide right. The Matadors last attempt at the tying goal came in the final minute when a CSUN rush came from the left side. The ball ended up near Kinoshi, who would point the ball towards the goal as it went to the wide side.
"We are very disappointed in the result," said CSUN head coach Terry Davila. "Before the first goal, we were controlling the game. New Mexico's second goal came when we were controlling the flow of play."
New Mexico (3-2) outshot the Matadors 9-8 (5-2 on goal). Regitnig made three saves. Beaulieu had one. CSUN would record four corner kicks, compared to three for New Mexico. The Matadors (2-2) take on No. 9 Denver (3-2) Sunday to complete the tournament. Kickoff is set for 11:30 a.m.
