NORTHRIDGE, Calif---CSUN Baseball celebrated its Alumni Weekend and Fifth Annual Bob Hiegert Golf Classic last weekend. Fifty former Matadors were on hand to participate in the annual alumni game at Matador Field on Sunday. A day later, the team hosted the golf classic at Porter Valley Country Club in Northridge as over 150 guests attended the festivities.
The weekend kicked off with the a special groundbreaking ceremony to celebrate the new Matador Field Entrance Plaza. Following the generous lead gift of alumnus Irv Zakheim, the new entrance plaza is the first phase of the Baseball Stadium Renovation Project, which proposes to modernize and upgrade Matador Field. The new entrance plaza will be located in the southwest corner of the facility.Â
Attendees then made their way to Matador Field to take part in the annual Alumni Game. Some of the greatest Matadors were on hand for the annual game including All-American and 2002 MLB World Series Champion Adam Kennedy (1995-97). Former MLB player Chuckie Fick (2006-07) joined the Alumni on the field as well as recent alums Conner O'Neil (2015-17), Samuel Myers (2016-17) and Dylan Alexander (2014-17).Â
The Alumni team found its offensive stroke early, staking to a 4-0 lead after an inning and a half. Former Matador outfielder Chester Pak (2012-15) hit a no doubt home run to right center field to lead off the game, and the Alumni scored three times in the first inning. Branden Berry (2016) drove a sole home run to right field to add to the Alumni lead.Â
CSUNÂ got on the scoreboard in the second inning, and senior Albee Weiss brought the current Matadors closer with a solo home run in the third. Junior Trevor Casanova would give the Matadors the lead with a one-out, three-run triple an inning later. The Matadors broke open a 5-5 game in the sixth with a six-run frame, capped off by a three-run triple from Kevin Riley. The Matadors would go to defeat the Alumni 20-5.Â
On Monday, the Matadors hosted the Fifth Annual Bob Hiegert Golf Classic where 25 foursomes took part in the tournament. Following a day of golf, assistant coach Tony Asaro served as the master of ceremonies at a social hour and dinner. Guests were treated to a video highlighting the Matadors' first annual Attitude of Gratitude camp held in November. A live auction was also held as guests had an opportunity to bid on many items including Los Angeles Dodgers tickets, Los Angeles Rams tickets, autographed plaques and signed baseballs.Â
CSUNÂ kicks off its 60th season on Friday, February 16 with the Matadors hosting BYU in the first of a four-game series. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.Â
