Matadors Drop Five-Set Thriller to UC Santa Barbara
10/20/2018 10:40:00 PM | Women's Volleyball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - The CSUN Women's Volleyball team couldn't hold a two sets to one lead as the visiting UC Santa Barbara Gauchos won the final two sets, including a thrilling 20-18 victory in the decisive fifth set, to hold off the Matadors in a Big West Conference match Saturday night in The Matadome.
The 19-25, 25-15, 23-25, 25-19, 20-18 setback is the Matadors' fourth straight as CSUN slips to 6-15 overall and 2-7 in the Big West. UCSB improves to 13-9 overall and 5-5 in conference play.
KEY STATISTICS
• Senior Aeryn Owens led all hitters in the match with a season-high 28 kills, coming within two kills of her career high. The senior from Rancho Cucamonga took a career-high 80 swings against the Gauchos and also had 15 digs for her seventh double-double this season and 25th of her career.
• Freshman Nicole Nevarez added 14 kills, hitting .367 on 30 attacks while junior Morgan Salone chipped in 11 kills (.400) and five blocks.
• Setters Erin Indermill and Kamalu Makekau each had a double-double with Indermill posting 22 assists and 14 digs and Makekau-Whittaker had 25 assists and 10 digs.
• The Matadors posted a 64-63 advantage in team kills but hit 58 points lower than UCSB, .230 to .172.
• Lindsey Ruddins led the Gauchos with 24 kills, hitting .323 on 62 swings.
SET 1
CSUN led by as many as 10 points in the opening set (17-7) before the visitors rallied for eight straight points to pull within 17-15. The Matadors rebounded by claiming four of the next five points to lead 21-16 following a Nada Dragovic ace. CSUN still led by five at 24-19 when Salone and Lexi McLeod stuffed a UCSB attack on set point.Â
SET 2
With the score tied at 7-7, UCSB claimed six of the next seven points to open up a 13-8 lead. The visitors extended the lead to as many as eight (19-11) and settled for a 25-15 win to even the set.
SET 3
CSUN opened the third set on a 6-1 run and pushed the lead to six at 10-4 on an Indermill ace. After UCSB battled back to within 11-8, a Gaucho service error followed by kills from McLeod and Nevarez boosted the lead back to 14-8. The Matadors maintained at least a two-point lead until a 4-0 UCSB erased an 18-15 CSUN lead. The two teams then played to four tied in the latter stages, the last coming at 23-23, when a Gaucho service error was followed by a Salone kill giving the Matadors the two sets to one lead.
SET 4
After hitting .026 in dropping set two, CSUN hit .108 in dropping set four 25-19. Salone's kill put the Matadors up 12-8 when the visitors took control of the set with an 8-1 run. A solo block by Nevarez got CSUN as close as 19-17 but the Matadors were outscored 6-2 down the stretch and the match headed to a fifth set.
SET 5
The Matadors, 3-3 in five-set matches this season, jumped out to a 3-1 lead before the Gauchos battled back to forge a 6-6 tie. With the score still knotted at 7-7, Salone's kill kept CSUN in front but the Gauchos went on a 5-1 run to force a Matador timeout at 12-9. Another UCSB point extended the lead to 13-9 before a Gaucho attack error sparked CSUN on a 4-0 that tied the score at 13-13. The score would remain tied at 17-17 when Owens connected for a kill giving the Matadors match point. But Ruddins answered and an ensuing Gaucho ace and a CSUN hitting error on match point gave UCSB the 3-2 win.
