IRVINE, Calif. - The CSUN Women's Volleyball team began the homestretch of the 2018 season Thursday, dropping a 3-1 decision at UC Irvine in a Big West Conference match at the Bren Events Center.
The 25-21, 25-19, 15-25, 25-19 setback drops CSUN to 6-16 overall and 2-8 in the Big West. The host Anteaters improve to 13-8 overall and 7-2 in conference play.

SET 1
The Matadors claimed three of the first four points of the match before the hosts rallied behind a 4-1 run to take a 7-5 lead. CSUN stayed within one for much of the set until Marjama's kill opened up an 18-16 lead. UCI extended its lead to 21-18 before the Matadors would score the next two on Anteater errors to close within 21-20. But consecutive Anteater kills gave UCI the margin it needed to take a 25-21 win.
SET 2
Looking to draw even in the second frame, the Matadors forged a 6-6 tie following a solo block by Owens. Three straight Anteater points opened up a 9-6 UCI lead before the Matadors answered with three straight, the last on a Nicole Nevarez kill, to pull even. Another 3-0 run by the hosts followed before CSUNÂ rallied back to know the score at 14-14. An ensuing 4-1 Anteater run opened up an 18-15 lead that the Matadors could not overcome as CSUNÂ fell 25-19.
SET 3
The Matadors led 5-2 in the early going, eventually leading by seven at 10-3 following a UCI hitting error. One of Owens' three aces pushed the lead to 12-4 and CSUN still led by eight (13-5) when the Anteaters rallied. A Marjama ace capped an 8-2 run to trimmed the Matador lead to 16-13 before CSUN used a late 5-0, two points coming on Owens aces, to open up a 23-14 lead. The Matadors then cut the UCI lead to two sets to one when an Anteater hitting error on set point gave CSUN the 25-15 win.Â
SET 4
A Johnson kill kept the Matadors within one (7-6) early in the final set before a 3-0 UCI run forced a CSUN timeout at 10-6. The hosts extended the lead to 12-7 before a Dragovic kill sparked a 5-0 Matador run which tied the score at 12. The score was still tied 13-13 when the Anteaters engineered a 6-2 run to open up a 19-15 cushion. CSUN would get within four at 22-18 before the hosts closed the match on a 3-1 run to take the victory.
