Matadors Top Antelope Valley in Exhibtion Action
10/25/2018 10:55:00 PM | Men's Basketball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---Three Matadors finished in double figures as CSUN Men's Basketball opened up exhibition play with an 88-77 victory over Antelope Valley on Thursday evening at The Matadome. Freshman Lamine Diane led all scorers and posted a double-double with 30 points and 17 rebounds in 32 minutes off the bench while Terrell Gomez had 19 points and knocked down four 3-pointers. Graduate Cameron Gottfried added 10 points to go with five rebounds.
"I like the fact that we scored 88 points, but we also turned the ball over a lot and missed a lot of foul shots," said head coach Mark Gottfried. "We've got so many young guys and sometimes they're a little nervous playing in front of a crowd for the first time. These exhibition games are good for a team, we need them. Overall, we did a lot of good things."
The Pioneers staked to an early 5-0 lead in the early going before the Matadors roared back to take their first lead at 12-9 on an old-fashioned 3-point play from Gomez. CSUN would go on a 9-0 run to take an 18-9 lead capped off by an emphatic dunk from Diane.
The Matadors were led by Diane in the first half who scored 10 points off the bench. Diane gave the Matadors a double-digit lead at 20-10 at the 11:04 mark, and Alex Sokol later added to the lead with a 3-pointer off a feed from Darius Brown II. Antelope Valley would rally to trim the deficit to 25-20 in the period, but the Matadors stayed in front after back-to-back late 3-pointers from Gomez and Gottfried near the end of the period.
After intermission, the Matadors built a 12-point lead following a jumper from Diane and a trey from Gomez. The Pioneers though did not go away quietly. After a 9-2 run, the Matadors' lead was trimmed to 45-40 at the 14:41 mark.
CSUN though went to work on the offensive end to extend the lead back to double-digits. Diane scored four of nine-straight Matador points that quickly pushed the lead to 54-40. Gomez hit one of his four treys in the game during the run as well. Diane gave the Pioneers trouble throughout the second half as the freshman poured in 20 points in the period.
Antelope Valley would pull to within 61-55 at the 9:31 mark before another Matador run finally put the game out of reach. The combination of Gomez and Diane poured in 10 points as the Matador orchestrated a 15-6 run to extend to a 76-61 lead. Following back-to-back layups from Brown and Diane, the Matadors would build their biggest lead at 80-61 with 3:13 left to play. CSUN scored the game's final five points, capped off by a late dunk by Avery Martinez to secure an 88-77 win.
All making their first appearance in a Matador uniform, Brown finished with seven points and seven assists while Michael Ou collected six points. Diane, who finished 14-for-21 from the floor, also tallied a game-high six offensive rebounds.
As a team, the Matadors shot 55.2 percent from the floor and 47.1 (8-for-17) from the 3-point arc. The Pioneers were held to 41.7 percent shooting for the night. CSUN also out-rebounded UAV 46-32. A total of 62 fouls were committed in the contest as 69 total free throws were taken. CSUN shot 50.0 percent from the charity stripe (16-for-32).
The Matadors will host Cal State LA next Thursday, Nov. 1 in their final tune-up before the start of the regular season. Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. The game will be streamed live on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health.
