COACH JEFF STORKÂ SAID
"You can win a match in a lot of different ways and this was a different way that you don't sign up for. I like the fact that we were gritty down the stretch and fought all the way. We still have some things to work on but overall I thought it was a great night. Nicole did a very nice job on the left side, Aeryn kind of does what she does, Nada (Dragovic) passed extremely well and our middles got involved a ton. Lots of good stuff tonight including some timely aces, good win."Â
SET 1
The visiting Aggies led by two several times in the early going before extending the lead to 12-9 when Nevarez's attack was stuffed by the UCD block. After an Aggie hitting error, UC Davis pushed the lead to 14-10 following a solo block. CSUN then engineered a 6-1 run to wrestle back the lead 16-15. Indermill was whistled for a setting error capping a 4-1 Aggie run which put the visitors back in front 19-17. The teams traded sideouts until Salone's kill set the Matadors up with set point at 24-23. After UCD saved one set point, Owens' kill gave CSUN another chance at 25-24 but the visitors claimed the ensuing three points to take the set 27-25.Â
SET 2
The Aggies out-hit the Matadors .219 to .000 in the frame and took a commanding lead in the match by running away with the 25-13 win. After leading 14-7, UCD extended the lead to 23-11 and were never threatened.
SET 3
Needing to win out, CSUN bolted to a 5-1 lead and led by as many as seven (11-4) following a Johnson kill. A 4-1 Matador run boosted the lead to double digits (15-5) when Owens posted her first ace. Still leading by 10 at 18-8, the Matadors watched as the visitors scored six unanswered points to get within four (18-14). But kills from Owens and Indermill, along with a Johnson/Owens block, pushed the lead back to 23-15 and a UC Davis hitting error on set point cut the Aggie lead to 2-1.Â
SET 4
After the two teams played to a 10-10 tie, an Aggie hitting error propelled CSUNÂ on a 6-1 run that gave the Matadors a 16-11 cushion. A Nevarez kill gave the Matadors their largest lead at 20-12 and after UC Davis rallied late to pull within 24-18, Owens' kill sent the match to a fifth set.Â
SETÂ 5
The Matadors, 2-3 in five-set matches, surrendered the first two points before claiming five of the next six points to take a 5-3 lead. Following an Aggie timeout, UC Davis rallied behind a 5-1 run to open up an 8-6 lead. But a pair of Nevarez kills and a Salone solo stuff put CSUN back in front 9-8. An Aggie kill evened things at 9-9 and the set would be tied four more times, the last at 13-13 before kills from Owens and Johnson helped CSUN snap a three-match skid.
