CSUN Falls in Straight Sets to UC Irvine

NORTHRIDGE, Calif. - One night after a overcoming a two-set deficit to post a five-set victory over UC Davis, the CSUN Women's Volleyball team could not muster the same magic Saturday and fell in straight sets to UC Irvine in The Matadome.
The 25-23, 25-16, 25-23 loss drops CSUN to 6-12 overall and 2-4 in the Big West. The visiting Anteaters improve to 10-7 overall and 4-1 in conference play.
KEY STATISTICS
• Senior Aeryn Owens led all hitters in the match with 12 kills, hitting .259 on a team-high 27 attacks. The senior from Rancho Cucamonga, who had two aces, also added 10 digs for her second consecutive double-double and fifth this season.
• Junior Brianna Johnson and freshman Nicole Nevarez each added seven kills with Johnson hitting a team-high .316 on 19 swings.
• Johnson also matched her CSUN high with five blocks, including three solo stuffs.
• Senior libero Kristey Markle shared match-high honors with 13 digs and also had a pair of aces..
• As a team, the Matadors hit .160 (37-18-119) in the loss while UC Irvine connected at a .216 clip (37-15-102).Â
• Abby Marjama led the Anteaters with nine kills while Idara Akpakpa and Loryn Carter each had eight kills.
COACH JEFF STORKÂ SAID
"The bottom line is we need to be mentally tougher both individually and collectively. We're putting ourselves into situations where we can win matches, we have to do it. You can come up with a ton of excuses but at the end of the day either you do it or you don't. It's become quite clear to me that we need to be mentally tougher."Â
SET 1
The Matadors came out firing in the opening set, opening up early leads of 6-3 and 8-4. After a UCI kill cut the lead to 8-5, CSUN went on a 4-0 run capped by an Anteater hitting error to lead 12-5. Following a UCI timeout, the Matadors continued to pour it on, claiming four of the next five points to take their largest lead of the set 16-6.
Four straight points by the Anteaters then forced a CSUN timeout at 16-10. A Morgan Salone kill the Matadors in front 17-11 and CSUN maintained a seemingly comfortable lead at 20-14 when a UCI attack went long. The Anteaters then put together a 5-1 run to force a Matador timeout at 21-19. CSUN won two of the next three points to lead 23-20 before the visitors took advantage of several Matador miscues to outscore CSUN 5-0 the rest of the way to pull out the 25-23 win.Â
SET 2
After neither team hit particularly well in set one, the Anteaters out-hit the Matadors .222 to .086. CSUN trailed 12-7 after an Anteater ace before the Matadors rallied behind a pair of Owens kills and some UCI miscues to pull within one at 13-12. A Nevarez kill kept CSUN within one at 14-13 before the visitors went on a 5-1 run to open up a 19-14 lead. Another Nevarez kill kept the Matadors within four (19-15) but CSUN would get no closer.
SET 3
The Matadors opened up a series of four-points leads midway through the final set, the last at 15-11 following a Nada Dragovic kill. AÂ Carter kill for the Anteaters sparked a 4-0 UCI run that forced a CSUNÂ timeout at 15-15. The Anteater run swelled to 6-0 before a kill from Owens and a Johnson solo block knotted the score at 17. The score would be tied four more times, the last at 22-22 when two straight UCI points set the visitors up with match point. A Nevarez kill saved one match point before another Carter kill sealed the 25-23 win.Â
UP NEXT
The Matadors are on the road for a single match next week as CSUNÂ travels to Hawai'i to take on the Rainbow Wahine Saturday, Oct. 13. The Matadors then return home Oct. 19 to open up a two-match homestand against No. 15 Cal Poly.
