SCOUTING THE OPPOSITION
Hawai'i (9-6, 5-1 Big West) had its season-long five-match win streak snapped with a 3-1 loss at No. 13 Cal Poly on Saturday. The loss was the first conference setback for the Rainbow Wahine who topped UC Santa Barbara in five sets the night before. Hawai'i, 6-5 at home this season, is led by senior OH McKenna Granato who ranks seventh in the Big West averaging 3.41 kills per set. As a team, the Rainbow Wahine lead the conference in assists per set at 13.11 per set.
Series: Saturday's match is the 23rd all-time between the Matadors and Hawai'i with the Rainbow Wahine holding a 20-2 lead in the series. Hawai'i has won seven straight dating back to CSUN's last win in 2014. The Matadors are 0-14 all-time in Honolulu dating back to 1981.
FRESHMEN CONTRIBUTIONS Â
A good portion the Matador offense this season, outside of senior Aeryn Owens, has come from a pair of true freshmen. Lexi McLeod and Nicole Nevarez have combined for 261 kills through 18 matches, just 19 kills behind Owens' team-leading total of 280. McLeod has reached double figures in kills eight times in 18 matches while Nevarez has hit double figures five times including two of CSUN's last three matches. In addition, McLeod has four double-doubles on the season which is ties for second on the team behind Owens' five.
OWENS CAREER KILLS COUNTERÂ
With 45 kills over three matches last week, senior Aeryn Owens upped her career kills total to 1,389. Owens remains in third place on the CSUN career kills list but now trails Missy Clements (1991-94) and second place by just 75 kills. Laura Walter holds the CSUN record for career kills with 1,694 from 1998-2001. Owens opened the 2018 season ranked 11th in school history and has already moved past eight players (Angela Hupp, Mahina Haina, Alexis Cormier, Cieana Stinson, Casey Hinger, Natalie Allen, Nancy Nicholls and Kathleen Dixon) on the Matador career kills list this season.
BIG WEST STANDINGS Â
Nearing the halfway point of the Big West season, the Matadors are currently sixth in the conference at 2-4. CSUN has 10 conference matches remaining with four at home and six on the road beginning Saturday at Hawai'i.
At 6-0, Cal Poly has a one-game lead over Hawai'i (5-1) with UC Irvine (4-1) third, UC Santa Barbara (4-3) fourth followed by fifth-place Long Beach State (3-3). The bottom third of the standings have UC Riverside (1-4) seventh, UC Davis (1-5) eighth and Cal State Fullerton (0-5) ninth. The Matadors have opened Big West play 2-4 for the second time in the last three seasons. Over the last 10 seasons, CSUN's best conference start through six matches was 5-1 in 2013.
COACHES CORNER
Matador head coach Jeff Stork shares his thoughts each week on the team, this week's matches and other topics.
On the single match at Hawai'i this week: "Last week we had three matches so there wasn't a lot of down time. This week there's a little bit more of a calm. You get to work on a few more things specifically about your team and specifically about Hawai'i as opposed to trying to prepare for three teams. We're looking for small improvements, Hawai'i is just another team that we have to play. It's always a great environment to play in but again I've got to get the team a little more mentally tough and ready to play."
MATADOR QUICK SETS
• With 12 block solos this season, junior Morgan Salone is just outside the season top-10 for CSUN's rally scoring era. Cieana Stinson holds the rally scoring era record with 21 solo stuffs in 2015 and Casey Hinger is among five players who currently share eighth place with 14.
• As a team, the Matadors have recorded 35 solo blocks to 31 for their opponents.
• CSUN is currently hitting .181 as a team but is slightly better in Big West matches where the Matadors are hitting .189.
• CSUN is a perfect 6-0 when out-hitting their opponent and 0-12 when being out-hit.
• Half of CSUN's six wins have come in five sets while four of the six wins have occurred on Friday.
