RIVERSIDE, Calif. - In her second-to-last collegiate match, senior Aeryn Owens was one of three Matador hitters in double figures but CSUN dropped a tough five-setter to UC Riverside in a Big West Conference match Saturday at SRC Arena.
Set scores were 25-17, 25-23, 14-25, 21-25, 15-11 as the Matadors slip to 8-19 overall and 4-11 in the Big West. The host Highlanders, who snap a six-match losing streak to CSUN, improve to 9-17 overall and 4-10 in conference play.
KEY STATISTICS
• Owens led all Matador hitters with 20 kills, hitting .362 on 47 swings. The senior from Rancho Cucamonga, who also added 14 digs for her 28th career double-double, now has 1,545 kills in her CSUN career.
• Freshman Lexi McLeod added 15 kills (.286) and eight digs while fellow freshman Nicole Nevarez chipped in 13 kills (.310) and four blocks.Â
• Senior setter Erin Indermill also had a double-double with 28 kills and 15 digs while Kamalu Makekau-Whittaker had 22 assists and nine digs.
• Despite the loss, CSUN had statistical advantages over the Highlanders including a .262 to .154 advantage in hitting, a 70-65 edge in digs and an 11.0 to 8.0 lead in blocks.
• Marissa Holt led UCR with a match-high 25 kills.
SET 1
The Matadors claimed the first three points of the match before the hosts stormed back to take a 10-6 lead. CSUNÂ trailed by as many as eight points (16-8) and then trailed 24-15 when the Matadors saved a pair set points before UCR claimed a 25-17 win.
SET 2
After trailing 10-6 in set one, CSUN flipped the script in set two, leading 10-6 following a Nevarez kill. After the Highlanders battled back to knot the score at 18-18, McLeod's kill opened up a 20-18 lead. Leading 23-22, the Matadors, who had a .424-.233 edge in hitting, were outscored 3-0 down the stretch and fell into a two-set hole.
SET 3
CSUN continued its hot hitting in the third frame, connecting at a .462 clip and leading from start to finish. Leading again by the score of 10-6, the Matadors extended the lead to 17-12 forcing a UCR timeout. CSUN then closed the set on an 8-2 run to win going away 25-14.Â
SET 4
After dropping seven of the opening 10 points, the Matadors rallied behind a 6-2 run to knot the score 9-9. The set remained tight until a Morgan Salone solo block opened up a 21-18 cushion. CSUN maintained the three point lead at the conclusion of the set, forcing a fifth set following the 25-22 win.
SET 5
CSUN was forced into an early timeout as UCR took an early 6-2 lead. Kills from Owens and McLeod trimmed the UCR lead to 6-4 but the hosts built the lead back to three (8-5) at the changeover. The Matadors got within two at 12-10 when a Nevarez swing found the deep corner but CSUN could get no closer in dropping the set 15-11.
