Matadors' Rally Falls Short at Washington State
11/27/2018 10:38:00 PM | Men's Basketball
PULLMAN, Wash.---Freshman Lamine Diane posted his third-straight double-double, registering 32 points, 18 rebounds and five blocks but CSUN Men's Basketball's (1-4) comeback bid fell short in a 103-94 loss to Washington State on Tuesday evening at Beasley Coliseum. Darius Brown II scored 23 of his 25 points in the second half, shooting 12-of-12 from the field while Rodney Henderson Jr. added 16 points off the bench.
Brown's 12-for-12 effort from the field set a new CSUN record for the most made shots without a miss in team history.
"I'm extremely proud. We're disappointed, our kids really wanted to win," said head coach Mark Gottfried. "They wanted to come in here and play well. Really if you think back, I thought the last four, maybe four and a half minutes of the first half probably was the gap and the difference. We had a little breakdown there but boy our kids played hard. They played hard to the wire."
The Cougars hit five of their first six shots to take a 15-8 lead at the first media timeout. Diane kept the Matadors within striking distance throughout the period as he scored eight of the first 10 CSUN points. Off the bench, Henderson Jr. gave the Matadors a lift as well, hitting three 3-pointers in the half. After knocking down a shot from long range, Henderson Jr. brought the Matadors to within 30-25 at 7:26 mark.
CSUN trailed by just five points with under six minutes to play but missed out on a chance to pull closer after consecutive defensive stops. The Cougars would turn things around, closing the half on a 19-6 run. WSU hit three 3-pointers during the stretch and finished the half 9-of-20 from long range.
Diane posted a double-double in the first half alone, scoring 16 points and grabbing 10 rebounds.
The Cougars stretched their lead to 20 points on the first possession of the half before the Matadors went on a 7-1 run to trim the lead to 57-43 on a layup from Diane. However, Diane committed a third and fourth foul early on in the half, forcing him to the bench.
CSUN would trim the lead to 67-55 on a put-back from Henderson Jr. but the Cougars responded with an 8-0 run capped off by a 3-pointer from Carter Skaggs. CJ Elleby would power the Cougars offensively, scoring a team-high 23 points including a 3-pointer at the 8:47 mark.
Brown put on an offensive exhibition in the second half, making all 11 of his shots. The freshman would score eight of 11 Matador points during one stretch, and his layup at the 2:36 mark brought CSUN within 95-80. After Brown scored another layup, Elijah Harkless forced a steal leading to one more Brown basket, that cut the lead to 97-87. Terrell Gomez collected another steal moments later and found Brown on one more layup, bringing CSUN within eight with under a minute to play. In the final seconds, Brown hit a fadeaway 3-pointer from the corner and a dunk in the face of a Cougar defender, but Washington State held on for the nine-point win.
The Matadors finished shooting 49.4 percent while the Cougars posted a 51.4 shooting percentage for the night. WSU hit 15-of-36 3-pointers for a 41.7 percent clip compared to CSUN's 7-of-25 3-point shooting effort (28.0 percent). The Matadors out-rebounded the Cougars, 42-37.
CSUN returns home this Saturday to host Sacramento State. Tip off from The Matadome is slated for 7 p.m.
