Matadors Fall to Sacramento State
12/1/2018 9:29:00 PM | Men's Basketball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---Despite four Matadors scoring in double figures, CSUN Men's Basketball dropped an 88-68 decision to Sacramento State on Saturday evening at The Matadome. Freshman Lamine Diane led the Matadors in scoring with 19 points to go with seven rebounds and two steals while sophomore Terrell Gomez finished with 18 points and three 3-pointers. Freshmen Darius Brown II and Elijah Harkless added 11 and 10 points respectively.
"Well, with us right now there wasn't any one thing that happened. I just think defensively we've got to figure this thing out," said head coach Mark Gottfried. "Teams are scoring too many points on us and shooting too good of a percentage. This was really one of our first bad games. I didn't think we played really well tonight. They looked like a veteran team, which they are. For us, we just have to get ourselves regrouped for Monday night [at Pepperdine]."
The Hornets would shoot 55.0 percent from the field in the game as well as 18-for-21 (85.7 percent) from the foul line. In contrast, the Matadors struggled from the field, finishing with a 38.7 percent clip. CSUN was outrebounded by Sacramento State 43-29 and outscored 50-32 in the paint.
Diane got the Matadors off to a quick start in the first half, throwing down a slam dunk for the first basket of the game. The Matador freshman scored nine of his team's first 15 points while Gomez sank his first two 3-pointers. Diane's dunk at the 14:57 mark of the half gave the Matadors a 15-6 edge over the Hornets. However, things would turn around quickly from that point on.
CSUN went scoreless for over three minutes, giving the Hornets an opportunity to post a 9-0 run to even the game. Brown and Harkless helped the Matadors maintain a slim lead near the midway mark of the half before the Hornets constructed a 10-2 run to take a 30-25 lead. Moments later, Marcus Graves scored five-straight Hornet points to stretch the lead to double-digits. Sacramento State would take a 44-29 lead on a late free throw from Graves before Mahamadou Kaba-Camara dunked the ball off a feed from Gomez to beat the halftime buzzer.
The Matadors remained within striking distance in the early minutes of the second half. Diane trimmed the lead to 50-37 on a driving layup at the 17:06 mark but the Hornets scored the next five points. Following a 3-point play from Diane, Sacramento State would put up an 8-0 run, capped off by back-to-back layups from Joshua Patton. CSUN trailed by as many as 24 points in the second half before cutting the deficit to 84-68 in the final minutes. The Hornets though scored the final four points to cap off an 88-68 victory.
For the Hornets, Graves posted a team-high 19 points while Ethan Esposito posted a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds.
CSUN opens up a busy three-game week on Monday as the Matadors visit Pepperdine at 7 p.m. Ghizal Hasan and Alan Zinsmeister will be on the call on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health in an audio broadcast at 6:50 p.m.
