Matadors Match Up With SIUE at Las Vegas Classic

NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Men's Basketball concludes the final rounds of the Continental Tire Las Vegas Classic this week. The Matadors take on SIUE on Saturday in the third round of the classic at 11 a.m. inside the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. An audio broadcast will be available on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health with Ghizal Hasan and Alan Zinsmeister on the call.
Also in third round action, Northern Colorado and Rider will face off on Saturday afternoon. The winner of CSUN and SIUE and the winner of Northern Colorado and Rider will meet on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. while the losers of the two games are scheduled to play at 11 a.m.
The Matadors are seeking their first win in the Las Vegas Classic this weekend. In the opening round, CSUN dropped an 82-68 decision at San Diego on Dec. 9. The Matadors returned to action in the classic against New Mexico State on Wednesday with the Aggies prevailing 92-57. SIUE, Northern Colorado and Rider have each gone 0-2 in the classic thus far.
Freshman Lamine Diane posted his fifth double-double of the season last Wednesday at New Mexico State. Diane tallied 25 points on 10-of-16 shooting while he added 10 rebounds in defeat. Sophomore Terrell Gomez added 16 points on 6-of-13 shooting from the floor.
After posting yet another double-double, Diane comes into Las Vegas competition seventh in the nation in points per game (24.6) and 16th in rebounds per game (10.2). He is the only freshman in the country to average a double-double this season and he is one of three Division I players to average at least 24.0 points and 10 rebounds. Diane is also ninth in the nation in field goals made (101). The freshman leads the Big West in scoring, rebounding, offensive rebounds per game (3.4), defensive rebounds per game (6.8) and blocks per game (2.3). This weekend will be a homecoming of sorts for Diane as he prepped at Findlay Prep in Henderson, Nev. prior to coming to CSUN.
Gomez continues to lead the Big West in minutes per game (37.4) while he is fourth in points per game (17.6), tied for seventh in free throw percentage (83.3) and tied for eighth in assists per game (3.5). Freshman Darius Brown II is tops in the league in steals per game (2.1) and second in assists per game (5.1). As a team, CSUN paces the Big West in scoring (75.9), field goal percentage (47.1), assists per game (16.8) and steals per game (7.1).
The Matadors will face SIUE for the first time in team history on Saturday morning. However, CSUN does have a history with Northern Colorado and Rider. The Matadors are 2-0 all time against Northern Colorado, winning most recently in Nov. 2005 in a tournament played in Berkeley, Calif. CSUN is 0-2 against Rider in its history with the Broncs winning both games on the road and at home during the 2008 calendar year.
A Closer Look at SIUE
Playing out of the Ohio Valley Conference, the Cougars are 2-7 after dropping a pair of Las Vegas Classic games to Drake (79-66) and Washington State (89-73) this week. Posting a 9-21 record last season, the Cougars were picked to finish 12th in the OVC this season. Three Cougars average in double figures led by senior David McFarland who scores 14.9 points and 3.8 rebounds. Junior Brandon Jackson averages a team-best 6.2 rebounds to go with 13.0 points while junior Tyresse Williford scores 12.8 points per game. The team averages 71.9 points and 33.8 rebounds.
A Closer Look at Northern Colorado
The Bears have gone 6-3 this season after falling to San Diego (85-65) and New Mexico State (74-62) in Las Vegas Classic games. UNC went 26-12 last season, winning the College Insider Tournament. The team was picked to finish to third in the Big Sky Conference prior to the season. Senior Jordan Davis leads the team in scoring with 23.9 points and 6.0 rebounds per game. UNC is eighth in the nation in 3-point field goals per game (11.0).
A Closer Look at Rider
The Broncs are 4-5 on the year as they dropped Las Vegas Classic games to Washington State (94-80) and Drake (76-58). A season ago, Rider earned a share of the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) title as they finished 22-10 and eventually competed in the National Invitation Tournament. The MAAC coaches picked the Broncs to repeat as conference champions. The team's leading scorer, sophomore Jordan Allen, is posting 14.4 points and shooting 44.4 percent from 3-point range.
