CSUN Powers Past Pepperdine, 90-83
12/3/2018 10:26:00 PM | Men's Basketball
MALIBU, Calif.---CSUN Men's Basketball (2-5) earned its first road win of the season, defeating Pepperdine 90-83 on Monday evening at Firestone Fieldhouse. The reigning Big West Player of the Week, freshman Lamine Diane posted his fourth double-double of 29 points and 12 rebounds while freshman Darius Brown II registered 20 points and nine assists. Sophomore Terrell Gomez added 19 points and seven assists and graduate Cameron Gottfried finished with 10 points, eight rebounds and six assists.
"We're excited. Tonight's a nice win. I think we rebounded really well from the other night," said head coach Mark Gottfried. "I think defensively, we picked up a lot of things quickly in a short amount of time. Switching when we needed to switch. Match-ups were a little better. We've talked about talking defensively. I think we took a step forward there but I think offensively we really ran our offense well."
After a red-hot first half where they shot over 58 percent, the Matadors posted a 52.9 shooting percentage while the Waves were held to a 42.0 percent clip. CSUN out-rebounded the opposition 46-33 and tallied its most assists since 2012 with 25.
In the first half, the Waves jumped out to an early 8-4 lead before the Matadors answered back with a 7-0 spurt, capped off by a Diane basket. However, the Waves scored on the next three possessions to reclaim a 15-11 lead. Pepperdine would be in front for most of the half, building a 25-15 advantage at the 9:49 mark.
CSUN, led by Diane's 17 first-half points, would chip away at the deficit. After Diane trimmed the lead to 32-26 on four-straight points, Brown nailed a 3-pointer in transition to bring CSUN within two. Pepperdine would later take a 42-39 lead with less than a minute to play before CSUN answered with the final five points.
Gottfried connected on a long 3-pointer to even the game followed by a CSUN defensive stop. Gomez grabbed the rebound and found Brown for the go-ahead basket as time expired, giving CSUN a 44-42 lead at the break.
In the second half, the teams traded leads three times before the Waves opened up a 57-52 lead at the 16:23 mark. The Matadors would charge back, forging a 17-2 run as the combination of Gomez and Diane scored 15 points during the stretch.
Pepperdine closed within six points (71-65) but the Matadors responded with a 9-0 spurt, capped off by a Brown 3-pointer, pushing the lead to 80-65. CSUN led by as many as 17 points in the second half before the Waves caught fire from long range to trim the lead to single digits in the final minute. Diane concluded his scoring with an emphatic dunk in the final minute to push his point total to 29.
With the win, the Matadors earned their first victory over a West Coast Conference opponent since defeating San Diego in Nov. 2012. CSUN also notched its first win over Pepperdine since Dec. 2011 and its first non-conference road victory since beating Portland State in Dec. 2015.
In what turned out to be a reunion night in many ways, assistant coach Jim Harrick returned back to Pepperdine where he served as head coach from 1979-88. Harrick led the Waves to four NCAA Tournament appearances while in Malibu. Also, three-fourths of the UCLA 1995 championship coaching staff were all in attendance as Pepperdine head coach Lorenzo Romar, Gottfried and Harrick reunited for the game.
CSUN returns home Wednesday to take on Cal State San Marcos on Wednesday evening with tip off slated for 7 p.m. Ghizal Hasan and Alan Zinsmeister will be on the call on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health with coverage set for 6:50 p.m.
