Matadors Defeated at San Diego, 82-68
12/9/2018 4:28:00 PM | Men's Basketball
SAN DIEGO, Calif.---CSUN Men's Basketball fell to San Diego 82-68 on Sunday afternoon at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. Freshman Lamine Diane narrowly missed a double-double as he posted 19 points to go with eight rebounds. Sophomore Terrell Gomez tallied 13 points while senior Blair Orr and freshman Michael Ou posted 10 points apiece.
"I think San Diego is the best team we've played," said head coach Mark Gottfried. "This is an experienced team and it's hard to get them rattled. They make shots and have poise. I thought it was our hardest game. Now, I also think two-thirds of the way in the first half, it's a four-point, five-point game. We had four-straight possessions where we hurried shots, and they turned every one of those into baskets. That was the gap and that was the difference, but our guys played pretty hard."
After shooting 60.0 percent from the field in the second half, the Matadors finished with a 48.3 percent effort while the Toreros posted a 52.5 clip. The teams collected 31 rebounds apiece while CSUN registered 21 assists on 29 field goals.
In would be a game of runs in the early minutes of the first half. The Matadors scored the first four points of the game before the Toreros answered with a 6-0 run. CSUN would reclaim the lead on an 8-2 run, capped off by a breakaway dunk from Diane. However, the Toreros completed a 10-0 run after a 3-pointer from Isaiah Wright to lead by six (18-12).
The Matadors kept the game close past the midway mark of the half. Darius Brown II knocked down a perimeter shot to trim the deficit to 21-18. CSUN though struggled from the field in the half, shooting 37.0 percent including going 0-for-7 from 3-point range, which gave the Toreros a chance to open up the lead. After Orr hit a jumper to trim the lead to nine, the Toreros went on a 9-2 run to lead 40-24 at the break.
Falling behind by 19 points to start the half, Terrell Gomez scored consecutive 3-pointers to bring CSUN within 43-30. The gap though would not get any closer as the Toreros regained control moments later. Alex Floresca scored four-straight points and Tyler Williams followed with a 3-pointer, which pushed the lead to 20 points.
Gomez collected 11 points in the second half to help shoulder the load offensively while Ou poured in eight points. CSUN trailed 82-62 with under two minutes to play before closing the game on a 6-0 run thanks to three-straight steals. Diane ended the game on a strong note, making six of his final eight shots to lead all scorers.
Brown finished with a career-high 10 assists and four steals in 34 minutes of action. Ou came off the bench to tie a career high in scoring with 10 points to go with four rebounds. After missing the last five games due to injury, freshman Teddy Ochieng returned to action posting three rebounds in 11 minutes.
For San Diego, Isaiah Pineiro had 16 points and seven assists while Floresca collected 16 points on 7-of-9 shooting.
Following finals week, the Matadors return to action next Sunday, Dec. 16 to host Pacific at The Matadome. Tip off is slated for 3 p.m.
