CSUN spilt a pair of softball games on day two of the Arizona State Kajikawa Classic Saturday.
Â
"We had some solid team efforts today," said CSUN head coach Tairia Flowers. "We are playing selfless softball and it's paying off."
Â
CSUN-STANFORD
In a slugfest, CSUN defeated Stanford 9-8. The Cardinal took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. The Matadors responded with four in the bottom of the frame. Kira Cauley singled in Savannah Horvath who had doubled to open the game. Two batters later, freshman Journey Rojas' first hit of her career turned out to be a three-run home run which gave CSUN a 4-2 lead.
Â
Stanford battled back, scoring four runs in the top of the second to regain the advantage. Horvath tied the game at six with a two-run home run in the bottom of the inning. Kristina Inouye put the Cardinal back in front with a solo shot in the top of the third. Lauren Wagner led off the Stanford fourth with a home run to make it 8-6.
Â
Megan Stevens began the CSUN fifth by hitting her second home run of the season. Pinch hitter Jessica Alexander led off the bottom of the sixth with a home run to tie the score at eight. Corrin Green walked to begin the CSUN seventh. Jaymi Steward entered the game to pinch run for Green. Rojas laid down a successful sacrifice bunt to advance Steward to second. Jillian James struck out. Julianna Martinez came up as a pinch hitter for Haileigh Gonzalez. Martinez responded with a single up the middle to drive in Steward for the game winning run.
Â
Horvath was 3-for-4 with two RBI's and two runs scored. Stevens went 2-for-3 with two runs scored. Mackenzie Babbit also was 2-for-3 for the Matadors. Teaghan Cowles, Inouye, and Lauren Wegner combined for six of the seven Stanford hits (two each).
Â
CSUN-SEATTLE U
Susanne Morris hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the eighth with two outs to send Seattle U to a 6-4 victory over CSUN in the nightcap.
Â
Maddy Kristjanson's two-run home run in the bottom of the fourth was key to a four-run Seattle U rally. The Matadors got on the board in the sixth. Alyssa Vazquez single in CSUN's first run. Later in the inning Jessica LaPierre singled home Vazquez. On the play Gonzalez advanced to third and would score on a Redhawks' error. Stevens would tie the score in the fourth when scored on a Carley Nance wild pitch.
Â
Playing with the international tiebreaker rule in effect beginning with the eighth, Vazquez was placed at second base. With one out, Jessica LaPierre walked. Mackenzie Babbit grounded into a double play to end the inning.
Â
Kamryn Kanae was placed at second for the Redhawks as the bottom of the eight got underway. Kristjanson was the SU leadoff hitter and popped out to Matador pitcher Jillian James. Cherise Silvan grounded out to James in the circle for the second out. Morris and James battled on a nine-pitch at-bat. With the count 3-2, Morris hit the game winning home run.
Â
Horvath was walked three times for the Matadors as seven different CSUN batters recorded a hit. Nicole Bolasky and Aly Choate both tallied two hits for the Redhawks.
Â
"Our pitchers settled in a little more today," Flowers said. "The goal is continue to grow every inning."
