NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—CSUN defeated Cal Poly 5-2 in the Big West women's tennis opener for both squads on Sunday afternoon.
Â
"This was a very big win for our team considering the injuries and illnesses that we have had," said CSUN head coach Gary Victor. "I have to thank our athletic training staff particularly Danae Delfin, Taylor Russo, and Erick Tuesta. They got this team ready to complete."
Â
The Matadors took the doubles point. Cal Poly's (2-3) No. 1 duo of Molly Reed and Seriana Saltzen defeated Elisa Elhadj and Alicia Dinkelmeyer 7-6. At No. 2, the Matadors' tandem of Monika Van de Vondel and Skyla Alcon defeated Abigai Bacharach and MacKenzie Worsnop 6-4. No. 3 saw CSUN's Kiryang Kim and Mari Taslagyan defeat Caroline Williams and Grace Olyphant 7-5.
Â
Van de Vondel earn the win at No. 1 singles when she handed Worsnop a 6-3, 6-1 defeat. Elhadj defeated Saltzen 6-3, 3-6, 6-2 at No. 2 singles. Reed defeated Kim 6-3, 6-3 in the No. 3 singles match. Alcon earned a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 4 against Williams. Olyphant would defeat Taslagyan 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 singles. Dinkelmeyer defeated Claire Bouquet 6-3, 6-2 at No. 6.
Â
"Having Elisa and Alicia in the lineup is huge," said Victor. "Cal Poly is a very strong team and pushed us to the limit. I am so proud of the energy and positivity and the team showed. Monika is starting to realize her potential as a very good collegiate player. Elisa fight was a difference maker today as she won the clinching match. Skyla played an excellent and well thought out match after a slow start. I was happy to see Alicia compete at a high level with confidence."
