LIHUE, Hawai'i - Senior Felix Mory continued his solid play but the CSUN men's golf team struggled as a whole on Friday, dropping from 16th to 19th after two rounds of the John Burns Intercollegiate at Wailua Golf Course.
Mory, who began the day tied for seventh, carded a second round one-under par 71 but slipped into a tie for 11th at four-under 140. The CSUN senior began the day at No. 13 and was even through five holes before birdies on the 18th and first holes moved him to two-under.
A bogey and birdie kept him two-under until a bogey five on his final hole dropped him to one-under for the day and four-under for the tournament.
UNLV's Shintaro Ben (-11, 133) continues to lead the individual competition as he holds a three-shot lead over Chandler Phillips of Texas A&M. Mory is just seven strokes off the pace heading into the final 18 holes on Saturday.
"Felix was not a happy camper after today's round, he was really looking to finish strong but hit a couple of bad iron shots," said CSUN head coach Jim Bracken. "Unfortunately as a group right now we're making poor decisions and our course management was not good today. Tomorrow is a new day so hopefully we can put up a good team round."
The rest of the squad struggled Friday as a second round 80 dropped Luis Calderon from 69th to 106th at 12-over 156. Trym Falch, who began the day 88th, also posted a second round 80 to drop to 112th at 13-over 157.
Michael Zhang followed up his opening round 79 with another 79 on Friday and dropped eight spots to 115th at 14-over 158. Gabriel Barnes is tied for 117th at 16-over 160 following rounds of 83-77 and Tomas Skajem, competing as an individual, is tied for 120th at 18-over 162 following rounds of 83-79.
UNLV (-21, 555) heads into Saturday's final round with a six-shot lead over Texas A&M (-15, 561). A total of 20 teams are competing in the tournament.
All teams will tee off the final round Saturday at 8 a.m.
