CSUN Rallies To Defeat Nevada 8-6
2/16/2018 4:24:00 PM | Softball
A four-run sixth inning keyed a CSUN rally as the Matadors defeated Nevada 8-6 in the first game of the Marucci Desert Classic
Â
Journey Rojas led off the top of the second with her second home run of the year to give the Matadors the lead. CSUN added to the lead in the third. Savannah Horvath led off the inning with a single and advanced to second on an error. Horvath stole third and came home on Kira Cauley's double to left. Cauley advanced to third on a wild pitch and scored on a Megan Stevens sacrifice fly.
Â
Trailing 3-0, Sierra Mello opened the Wolfpack third with a single. Kenzi Goins was hit by a Jillian James pitch. Jennifer Purcell reached on a fielder's choice when Goins was retired at second. Goins moved to third on the play. Erika Hansen doubled in Goins as pinch-runner Ali Tedford made it to third. Kenedee Jamerson relieved James to face Aailyah Gibson. Gibson grounded out to second to score Tedford. Alyssa Mendez tied the game with a single that plated Hansen.
Â
Mendez advanced to second on a passed ball. Jyllian Ahart doubled in Mendez to give Nevada the lead. Ahart moved to third as a Jamerson pitch went to the backstop. Pinch hitter Kwynn Warner flew out to left to end the inning. Gibson smacked a home run in the bottom of the fifth to increase the Wolfpack lead.
Â
The Matadors rallied with four runs in the top of the sixth to take the lead. Stevens began the frame with a single and stole second. On a 3-2 count, Corrin Green tied the game with a two-run home run. Rojas doubled. Amanda Geil relieved Kali Sargent. Her first batter was Jocelin Soto who successfully sacrificed Rojas to third. Alyssa Vazquez walked. Haleigh Gonzalez re-entered the game in place of Vazquez. She stole second.
Â
On the throw, Rojas scored on a throwing error by Haley Burda, the Nevada catcher. Pinch hitter Jessica Alexander reached on an infield single which pushed Gonzalez to third. A two-out walk to Savannah Horvath loaded the bases. Cauley picked up an RBI with a walk that drove in Gonzalez. Stevens, the 10th batter of the inning, flew out to center to conclude matters.
Â
Jessica Sellers homered to center in the bottom of the sixth for a 7-6 score. Gonzalez provided an insurance run in the top of the seventh in a ground out to second that allowed Jaymi Steward to score. Taylor Troost, who came on in relief of Jamerson to start the sixth, retired the Wolfpack in order to clinch the win and earn the save.
Â
"We battled until the end," said CSUN head coach Tairia Flowers. "We gave up some freebies and a couple of big hits, but it was nice seeing us take it an inning at a time and answer back. We are growing in every game and that's what we are looking for."
Â
Rojas was 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Green and Horvath both posted two hits. Ahart was the lone Nevada player with multiple hits as she was 2-for-4.
Â
CSUN (2-4) is scheduled to play South Dakota (0-6) at 6 p.m. Friday night on the UNLV campus in game two of the tournament.
