CSUN Splits On Day Two Of Marucci Desert Classic

CSUN-FIU RECAP
FIU (4-5) defeated CSUN 7-3 in eight innings in the opener. Savannah Horvath led off the game for CSUN with her fifth home run of the season. Julia Gilbert's RBI double in the fourth tied the score. Pinch hitter Ty Cueva put CSUN back in front in the top of the fifth when she drove in two runs with a single.

Matadors' pitcher Jillian James carried a one-hitter into the bottom of the sixth. James gave up a single to Michaela Mills to lead off the inning. With one out, Venessa Gallegos tied the game with a two-run home run.

The Matadors had a chance to take the lead in the top of the seventh. CSUN put runners on the corners with two outs before FIU starter Shannon Saile recorded her 15th strikeout of the game, retiring Kira Cauley. The game would go to extra innings.

With the international tiebreaker in place, CSUN was retired in order in the top of the eighth. Erin Eiland was placed at second to begin the Panthers' eighth. Eiland advanced to third on a Michaela Mills' fielder's choice. Gilbert was intentionally walked to load the bases. Gallegos hit a grand slam to give FIU the victory.

Four different CSUN players had a hit. Gallegos' two home runs comprised two of the five Panthers' hits in the game.

"We faced a good team today and we just fell short," said CSUN head coach Tiaria Flowers. "We put ourselves in a position to win which is a plus, and now we know what the that pressure feels like."

The Matadors used a four-run seventh inning to break a 1-1 tie and go onto a 5-2 victory over Idaho State in Saturday's finale.

Frankie Tago put the Bengals on the board first when she doubled in Kelsey Breer in the bottom of the fourth. Cauley doubled down the left field line in the top of the fifth to tie the game. Mackenzie Babbitt scored on the play.

Babbitt opened the seventh by reaching on an error. Horvath singled, allowing Babbitt to move to second. Cauley loaded the bases when she reached on a fielder's choice. Journey Rojas was called out on an infield fly for the second out. Jessica Alexander put CSUN into the lead with a 2 RBI base hit. Jocelin Soto reached on an error which allowed Alexander and Cauley to score.

Idaho State (0-3) threatened in the bottom of the seventh. With one out, the Bengals worked out back-to-back walks. Taylor Troost who came on in relief of Kenedee Jamerson in the fourth, struck out Emma Bordenkecker for out number two. A CSUN error allowed Ashley Creekmore reach first safely as Haley Harrison scored. Breer would fly out to end the game.

Horvath was 2-for-4 to pace the Matadors. Jamerson and Troost combined on a six-hitter.

"We continue to have some good pinch hit at bats and finding a way to win," Flowers said. "We're playing some good teams and facing some good challenges early this season."

The Matadors (4-5) are scheduled to conclude tournament play Sunday morning when CSUN faces New Mexico.
