The University of New Mexico defeated CSUN 5-2 in the final game of the Marucci Desert Classic for the Matadors Sunday afternoon.

Andrea Howard gave the Lobos the lead with a three-run home run in the top of the third. CSUN scored in the bottom of the third when Kira Cauley's infield single plate Haleigh Gonzalez. A two-out CSUN error in the fourth led to a Chelsea Johnson triple the drove in two runs.

The Matadors threatened in the bottom of the sixth. Savannah Horvath walked and moved up a base when Cauley singled. Both runners advanced on a stolen ball. New Mexico pitcher Jensen Main struck out the next two CSUN batters before Jaymi Steward singled in Horvath. Alyssa Vazquez popped out to first to end the inning. The Matadors stranded a baserunner in the bottom of the seventh as the Lobos (2-8) secured the victory.

Cauley tallied two of the six CSUN hits. Taylor Troost and Megan Stevens combined on a five-hitter, as Stevens took the loss. Steven struck out four in 4.1 innings. Main earned the complete game victory. She struck out four.

"We didn't play at our best today," said CSUN head coach Tiaria Flowers. "Megan Stevens had a good outing, which was nice to see. We just need to continue to make adjustments."

The Matadors (4-6) open the home slate Wednesday afternoon as CSUN hosts No. 13/14 Auburn (13-0). First pitch is set for 2:30 p.m.
