NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—No. 6/12 Auburn defeated CSUN 8-0 in the home opener for the Matadors Wednesday afternoon.
Â
Victoria Draper worked out a leadoff walk to begin the game. Draper, the Division I leader in stolen bases, stole second for her 14th of the year. With two outs, Courtney Shea singled up the middle to drive in Draper for the opening run of the game.
Â
A two-out CSUN error in the top of the second led to a pair of unearned runs for the Tigers (14-0). Casey McCraken added to the advantage with a two-out, two-run home run in the top of the third. Morgan Podany added an RBI single later in the third.
Â
Kaylee Carson started the game for Auburn and retired all six she faced in two innings. She gave way to Chardonnay Harris who threw a 1-2-3 third. Makaya Martin faced seven batters over the next two innings, hitting Savannah Horvath in the fourth to provide CSUN with its first baserunner. She exited the game after the fifth
Â
Ashlee Swindle came on in the sixth and got the first two outs. Horvath broke up the combined no-hitter with an opposite field single to right. Kira Cauley's opposite field single to left pushed Horvath to second. A passed ball put both runners in scoring position with Journey Rojas at the plate. Rojas walked on four pitches to load the bases. Megan Stevens came up as a pinch-hitter. Stevens grounded out to second to end the inning.
Â
Jenna Olszewski added a two-out, two-run home run in the top of the seventh. Kara Bilodeau pitched the seventh, giving up a Raquel Jaime single with two outs.
Â
Shea's three hits (3-for-3) was the top performance for the Tigers. Alyssa Rivera went 2-for-3 with run. Auburn would outhit the Matadors 11-3.
Â
"We played a very good team today," said CSUN head coach Tairia Flowers. "It was nice to see some pinch-hitters come in and attack the strike zone. We did some things defensively. Jessie (LaPierre) threw out two base runners attempting to steal and had a couple of good defensive plays. Hopefully we will continue to build on this and get the jitters out before hit Palm Springs on Friday."
Â
The Matadors (4-7) head to the Mary Nutter Cathedral City Classic this weekend. Play opens Friday against No. 12/13 Arizona at 12:30 p.m. and concludes against BYU at 8 p.m.
