NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball racked up 22 hits, 21 runs, nine extra base hits and six home runs in a 21-5 rout of Manhattan on Friday afternoon at Matador Field. The trio of Brandon Bohning, Joey Cooper and Trevor Casanova each collected four hits while Albee Weiss hit two home runs, scored three times and drove in four runs. Justin Toerner, Ryder Kuhns, Kyle Barret and Bohning also hit home runs in the victory. On the mound, Tei Vanderford worked six innings, striking out six batters and allowing five runs.Â
Although the final score tells a different story, the Jaspers led early on as they scored two in the first inning off a two-run single Richie Barrella. Manhattan starter Joe Jacques cruised through the first two innings but a key error in the third inning opened the door for a huge CSUN inning.Â
Bohning began the inning by legging out an infield single. In a key play, the Jaspers appeared to have a double play lined up after Alvaro Rubalcaba hit a grounder to third base but the throw to second baseman Will Trochiano was dropped. Two batters later, Casanova drove in the Matadors' first run on an RBI single to center field. Following a strikeout of Weiss, Kevin Riley doubled in the tying run. Justin Toerner stepped to the plate next and deposited a three-run home run to deep right field.Â
Ahead 5-2, the Matadors would be far from done in the third inning. After the next two batters reached safely, Bohning drove in another run on a single to right. Two batters later, Cooper singled in two more runs with an infield single. A ninth run would come across in the frame as well on a pick off at first base. All nine runs in the third inning were unearned.Â
The Matadors tacked on three more runs in the fourth on a two-run home run from Weiss. Nolan Bumstead added to the lead with an RBI single following a triple from Toerner.Â
Vanderford settled down after the rough first to retire 13 of the next 14 batters he faced. He took a 13-2 lead into the sixth inning where the Jaspers finally got back into the scoring column. Fabian Pena stroked a two-run shot to left center field with one out, and Barrella added a third run on an RBI infield single. Vanderford escaped further trouble by retiring the final two batters to end the frame.Â
Bohning got a run back with one swing of the bat in the sixth as he hit his first career home run. The Matadors continued to flex their muscle over the next two innings as Kuhns hit a three-run home run in the seventh, and the duo of Barett and Weiss each belted two-run shots in the eighth to extend the lead to 21-5.Â
"It's great to come out here put some runs up and do the simple things right," said Bohning about the victory. "Regardless of the situation, we just try to take advantage of every opportunity we get. We seized the moment [in the third inning] and we scored a bunch of runs. We want to keep these good vibes going and continue to do our thing."
Through five games, Weiss has five home runs, seven runs scored and 12 RBI to go with a .429 average at the plate. Casanova has also enjoyed a red hot start, hitting .579 with a home run and five RBI.Â
Barret's home run came on his very first at bat with the Matadors. He is the first player to accomplish that feat since Joshua Goosen-Brown hit a homer in his first at bat against Seattle University in 2011. Kuhns' home run was also his first hit of his Matador career.Â
Out of the bullpen, the trio of Theron Kay, Blake Schriever and Jayson Newman all worked scoreless frames in the victory.Â
The Matadors continue their three-game series with the Jaspers on Saturday afternoon at 1 p.m.
