Matadors Drop Three on Final Day of CSUN Tournament
3/11/2018 4:09:00 PM | Softball
The Matadors fell 4-1 to Seattle U and 7-1 to Texas Tech sandwiched around the final three innings of a second game against the Red Raiders at Matador Diamond.
In Sunday's opener, CSUN starter Jillian James cruised through five innings when the Redhawks touched her for single run to tie the score in the sixth inning. Seattle then salted the win away when Madison Cathcart belted a two-run homerun to highlight a three-run seventh.
Journey Rojas got the Matadors on the board in the bottom of the second as she doubled before coming around to score on a Haileigh Gonzalez single.Â
James took the loss despite giving up just five infield hits over the first six innings. Megan Stevens had two hits while Mackenzie Babbitt collected the last of CSUN's five hits in the opener.
The Matadors then resumed Friday's game against Texas Tech that was suspended by darkness. CSUN came up in the bottom of the seventh and were set down in order by Erin Edmoundson as the Red Raiders took a 9-5 win.
Edmoundson then scattered four hits in a complete game effort in the finale as Texas Tech (16-8) finished the weekend with a 7-1 victory. Taylor Troost took the loss for the Matadors who went 0-4 in the tournament, dropping CSUN to 10-17 on the season.
Each team scored a first inning run as the Red Raiders got a leadoff triple from Heaven Burton, who scored on a sacrifice fly by Michaela Cochran. Savannah Horvath led off the home half of the first with a double and came around to score on a Stevens single.Â
A three-run fourth, highlighted by Allison Knopp's two-run shot, gave the Red Raiders the margin they needed before salting away the victory with another three-run outburst in the seventh.
After Horvath's double in the first, Edmoundson gave up just three singles the rest of the way in picking up her 10th win of the season. Gonzalez and Rojas had CSUN's other two singles in the loss.
The Matadors conclude their season-long, eight game home stand this Wednesday, Mar. 14 as CSUN hosts Ohio State (12 p.m.) and North Dakota State (2:30 p.m.) for single games at Matador Diamond.
