CSUN Defeats DePaul 1-0; Ohio State Edges CSUN 4-2
3/17/2018 8:36:00 PM | Softball
FULLERTON, Calif.—CSUN closed the final day of action on Saturday at the Cal State Fullerton Easton Invitational with a walk-off victory against DePaul before being edged out against No. 16/17 Ohio State.
Â
CSUN-DEPAUL
Savannah Horvath drove in the game winning run with one out in the bottom of the seventh to earn CSUN at 1-0 victory over DePaul.
Â
Pinch hitter Jaymi Steward led off the seventh by working out a walk. Haileigh Gonzalez successfully sacrificed Steward to second. Alyssa Vazquez walked. Both runners were able to advance a base when Mackenzie Babbitt grounded out to third. Horvath worked the count against Blue Demon starter Pat Moore to 1-1 before she drove in the gamewinner with her 51st career double (a CSUN school record that is the fifth most in Big West history).
Â
Taylor Troost tossed her seventh career shutout for the Matadors. She allowed five hits and struck out three. Moore struck out six as she gave up only four CSUN hits.
Â
CSUN-OHIO STATE
Ohio State defeated CSUN 4-2 in the nightcap. The Buckeyes jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the third on a Lilli Piper two-run home run. Megan Stevens cut the lead in half with an RBI single in the bottom of the third. Gonzalez tied the score with her second home run of the season in the bottom of the fourth.
Â
Emily Clark's two-RBI double in the top of the fifth proved to be the difference in favor of the Buckeyes. The Matadors loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the fifth. Ohio State pitcher Morgan Ray struck out the final two batters of the CSUN inning to quiet the threat.
Â
Jillian James took the complete game loss. She allowed six hits, two of which went to Piper. Stevens charted two of the five CSUN hits.
Â
"It came down to a couple of plays in both games today," said CSUN head coach Tairia Flowers. "We figured it out in game one fell a bit short in game two. But I believe we are learning and working through each game."
Â
CSUN (12-21) hosts No. 5 Oklahoma (22-2) Monday afternoon. Coverage on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health with Brandon Marcus begins at 11:50 a.m. with first pitch set for 12 p.m.
