DAVIS, Calif. --- The CSUN softball team fell, 4-3 in eight innings versus UC Davis, Sunday afternoon at La Rue Field. Mackenzie KIla led the way with three hits and two RBIs for the Matadors. Malia Williams went six innings, giving up two earned runs while striking out three.
Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
After a scoreless first two innings, CSUN struck first in the top of the third. Jordan Ramirez doubled to deep center to get a rally going for the Matadors. Savannah Simons then was hit by a pitch. Kila then singled to right field and the lead runner Ramirez scored, followed by Simons who also scored on an error by the right fielder, making it a 2-0 CSUN.Â
Â
UC Davis threatened in the bottom of the third but the CSUN defense kept things in check. A walk, hit by pitch, and a single put pressure on the Matadors. The lead runner at third base was then picked off, and the home team's best hitter, Alyssa Dethlefson flew out to center field to end the threat.Â
Â
In the next inning the Aggies struck back. Once again UC Davis loaded the bases with one out, and this time came through with a run. A sacrifice fly off the bat of Olivia Macfarland put the Aggies on the board as they cut the lead in half at 2-1. The CSUN defense held its own and only allowed that one run, after WIlliams ended the inning with a clutch strikeout looking to pinch hitter Amanda Baldwin.
Â
It was a one run CSUN lead until the bottom of the sixth. After two walks, Macfarland singled up the middle and the runner on second rounded third base to score, even after a close throw by Raegan Jackson. The next batter, Annika Norquist singled to left field and the runner on third scored as UC Davis took the lead. The CSUN defense did prevent a third run from scoring as the inning ended on the second runner being out at home. Still, UC Davis took the lead, needing only three outs to earn the win going into the top of the seventh.
Â
CSUN's Perseus Yanez singled to left field to start the inning. After a flyball out, Maddie Padilla singled to right field to put two runners on for Kila. The senior infielder then had arguably her most clutch hit of the season with a single to center field. Yanez scored and the game was tied at three apiece.Â
Â
The game went into extras and CSUN couldn't score in the top of the seventh.
Â
In the bottom of the seventh, Norquist brought home the winning run, drawing a walkoff walk with the bases loaded.Â
