SAN DIEGO—Boston University defeated CSUN 9-2 in the first game of the San Diego Classic for the Matadors Friday afternoon.
Â
Three first inning extra base hits allowed the Terriers to score three runs in the top of the first. Alex Heinen's second RBI double in the top of the second drove in the fourth BU run of the game.
Â
Savannah Horvath broke the seal for CSUN in the third with a triple that plated Mackenzie Babbitt. Journey Rojas cut the BU lead in half with a one-out RBI double in the bottom of the fourth. Megan Stevens scored on the play.
Jilee Schanda put the Terriers back up by three with a single in the top of the fifth that scored Heinen. Â The Matadors threatened in the fifth and sixth, but left runners on in scoring position in each of those innings. Boston University (5-4) broke the game open with four runs in the top of the seventh. Pinch-hitters Pudi Hernandez and Gator Rascon began the CSUN seventh with base hits, but CSUN could not get them home.
Â
Heinen tallied a game high four hits (4-for-4). Jilee Schanda went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in and two runs scored. Stevens posted two of the seven CSUN hits.
Â
"We didn't play good softball," said CSUN head coach Tairia Flowers. "BU was able to take advantage of our mistakes. Pudi and Gator did a great job coming in off the bench and putting some pressure on in the seventh."
Â
The Matadors (6-11) face San Diego State Friday night at 7 p.m.
