SAN DIEGO—Taylor Troost tossed a complete game five-hitter as CSUN defeated San Diego State 2-0 in game two of the San Diego Classic Friday night.
Â
"Taylor did a great job today," said CSUN head coach Tairia Flowers.
Â
Savannah Horvath walked to begin the game on four straight pitches. Kira Cauley hit a grounder to second which was bobbled by Katie Byrd, allowing both runners to reach safely. Megan Stevens' infield single loaded the bases. Gator Rascon fouled out to third for the first out. The Aztecs' pitcher, Marissa Moreno struck out Journey Rojas and Kenedee Jamerson to conclude the inning.
Â
Horvath walked to open the Matadors' third and stole second. With one out, Stevens smacked a ground rule double that plated Horvath. Rojas walked with two outs to force a San Diego State pitching change. Alex Formby relieved Moreno and struck out Jamerson to keep the score 1-0.
Â
Lesha Hill's started the San Diego State third. Alizae Umi popped up to Rascon, the CSUN catcher, attempting to sacrifice pinch-runner Janina Jusay up a base for the first out. Aris Metcalfe singled, allowing Umi to reach second safely. Megan Smith's grounder at third was fielded by Jessica Alexander. Alexander tagged out Jusay. Katie Byrd lined out to Horvath at short to conclude the inning.
Â
Stevens recorded her second double of the game with one out in the fifth, but she was stranded at second. Taylor Adams led off the Aztec fifth with a double. Taylor Troost, the CSUN starter struck out the next two Aztecs. Down 1-2 in the count, Metcalfe, took a ball, which went to the backstop, allowing Adams to move to third. Troost needed seven pitches, but she would strike out Metcalfe to get out of the inning.
Â
Pinch-hitter Pudi Hernandez began the CSUN sixth with a four-pitch walk. Alexander successfully sacrificed Hernandez to second. Haileigh Gonzalez grounded out to third, but Hernandez could not advance on the play. Mackenzie Babbitt popped up for the final out.
Â
The SDSU sixth began with a Smith single to left center. Byrd attempted to sacrifice Smith to second. Her first attempt was popped in the air where Jamerson, the CSUN first baseman caught the ball and threw back to first where Gonzalez was waiting to complete the double play. Molly Sturdivant lined out to left on the next Troost pitch to finish out the frame.
Â
Horvath recorded her sixth home run of the year, a blast to left, to begin the CSUN seventh. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Adams reached on an infield single. Jordan Fick singled to center to bring up pinch-hitter Anna Sherburne. On the first pitch in which Sherburne saw, Sherburne grounded out to second to end the game.
Â
Troost struck out four, walked one, and only faced five above the minimum. She improved to 3-4 on the year. Stevens would end the game 3-for-4. Adams posted two of the SDSU hits in three at-bats. San Diego State (10-9) had defeated No. 21 Minnesota 6-2 earlier in the day on their home field.
Â
"We played solid defense and came up with a couple of hits when we need them," Flowers said. "It was a good team effort."
Â
CSUN (7-11) continues play at the San Diego Classic Saturday. The Matadors face Colorado State (8-3) at 2 p.m. before facing Santa Clara (1-11) at 4:30 p.m.
