Cal Poly Edges CSUN 5-4
3/31/2018 4:42:00 PM | Baseball
NORTHRIDGE, Calif.---Cal Poly avoided a sweep by scoring two runs in the eighth to rally past CSUN Baseball (12-15, 2-1 BWC) 5-4 on Saturday afternoon at Matador Field. Trevor Casanova collected two hits including an RBI double while Riley Conlan and Albee Weiss homered. Out of the bullpen, Tei Vanderford worked three shutout innings, scattering two hits and Hayden Shenefield struck out three batters over 1.1 innings.Â
"I give [Cal Poly] a lot of credit for getting the ball on the ground as much as they did," said head coach Greg Moore. "They put pressure on our defense;Â on this field it's a good strategy. They did a great job getting above the baseball. It would be nice to say that things didn't go our way but they did a really good job."
"I like how the team is working," added Moore about his team's play. "I told them after the game that we need to get a little more detailed on a few things but their work is impressive. They like getting out here and rolling in the dirt."Â
The Matadors got off to a solid start in the first inning as Weiss homered for the 13th time this season to put CSUNÂ ahead 1-0.
Cal Poly left three batters on base through the first two innings but struck for three runs in the third. A leadoff hit from Alex McKenna off Matt Acosta led to a pitching change on the mound. Wesley Moore entered the fray but the next three batters would reach. Colby Barrick worked a bases loaded walk and the tandem of Nick Meyer and Josh George recorded RBI groundouts. Shenefield relieved Moore with two outs and a runner at third base as he retired Tate Samuelson for the third out.Â
CSUN answered back with three runs over the next two frames to surge back into the lead. In the bottom of the third, Brandon Bohning and Joey Cooper hit singles to put runners at the corners. Casanova then roped a double down the right field line to score Bohning, cutting the deficit to one. An inning later, Nolan Bumstead singled to lead off the fourth, and Conlan followed with a towering two-run home run to give CSUN a 4-3 edge.Â
With already seven combined runs scored through four innings, pitching would take over in the middle innings. Shenefield struck out the side in the fourth and Vanderford worked around two base runners in the fifth inning. Vanderford tossed a scoreless sixth and pitched a clean seventh to keep the Matadors ahead by a run.
"Hayden Shenefield came out and did exactly what he wanted to do and that's throw the ball down in the zone and throw the slider for strikes. He had a real clean inning," added Moore. "Tei is on his way back. He feels good physically and starting to make his pitches like he did a year ago."
On the flip side, Darren Nelson recovered from a rocky start to shut out the Matadors in the fifth and sixth including leaving the bases loaded in the Matador sixth. Nelson gave up a one-out hit to Casanova in the seventh and allowed the Matador catcher to reach second base on a groundout before exiting the game. Andrew Alvarez would retire Justin Toerner on a popout to shortstop to end the seventh.Â
The Mustangs would get back into the scoring column in the eighth, scoring the tying and go-ahead runs. Jayson Newman walked the first batter of the inning and allowed George to reach on a single that just scooted past a diving Bohning on the infield. Blake Schriever came on to retire Samuelson on a sacrifice bunt but Nick DiCarlo hit a game-tying sacrifice fly. Moments later, Scott Ogrin picked up a timely two-out RBI double to plate George. Schriever eventually loaded the bases before striking out Bradlee Beesley.Â
Austin Dondanville set down the Matador lineup in order in the eighth, and he retired Bohning to start the ninth before Alvaro Rubalcaba singled. In a pivotal play in the inning, with Joey Cooper at the plate, Rubalcaba tried to advance to second base on a ball in the dirt. Ruabalcaba beat the throw down to second but he slid past the base, giving shortstop Kyle Marinconz an opportunity to apply the tag for the out. Dondanville would force Cooper to fly out to end the ballgame.Â
Casanova notched his team-best 13th multiple-hit game of the season on Saturday while also extending his hitting streak to six straight. Weiss registered his 35th career home run, putting him one away from fifth place all time in Matador history.Â
The Matadors will take a break from Big West play as they travel to take on Pepperdine on Tuesday afternoon in a non-conference contest. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m.Â
