NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—UC Davis swept a Big West Conference softball doubleheader from CSUN Saturday as Savannah Horvath broke the Matadors' school record for career home runs.
GAME 1
UC Davis scored three runs in the fifth and three runs again in the sixth to defeat the Matadors 6-3 in the opener. Â
Horvath led off the bottom of the first with a double down the left field line. Kira Cauley used her speed to stretch a short hit to center into a double as Horvath took third. Brooke Yanez, the Big West Conference leader in strikeouts, struck out Megan Stevens for the first out. Raquel Jaime put down a successful sacrifice bunt which allowed Horvath to score for the first run of the game. Journey Rojas would strike out to end the inning.Â
The Matadors added a run in the second on a one-out UC Davis error. CSUN worked out a pair of walks against Yanez in the fourth. With two outs, Mackenzie Babbitt became Yanez's seventh strikeout of the game.Â
Riley Siegel opened the fifth with a double to center. Caroline Figueroa's ground out to short advanced Siegel to third. Alex Sotomayor's opposite field single to left plated Siegel for the first UCD run. Alyse Rojas grounded out to second as Sotomayor moved to second. Pinch hitter Aly Gomonet walked to bring up the Aggies' No. 3 batter, Isabella Leon. Leon tied the score with a single up the middle. Ashley Lotoszynski walked on a 11-pitch at-bat to load the bases. Frankie Mendoza hit a grounder to second. Haileigh Gonzalez attempted to tag Lotoszynski going to second. The ball was knocked out of her glove allowing all the runners to reach safely. Maddie Rojas popped out for the final out.Â
Figueroa walked with one out in the sixth. Sotomayor singled to left which chased CSUN starter Taylor Troost. Stevens entered from right field to pitch to Alyse Rojas, UCD's leading hitter. Stevens hit Rojas to load the bases. Gomonet singled down the right field line to drive in two runs. She took second on the throw as Leon came to bat. Leon put down a successful sac bunt to plate a run for a 6-2 score. Lotosynski flew out to center to wrap up the inning.Â
Horvath became the all-time leader in career home runs for the Matadors with her 47th career blast in the bottom of the seventh with a solo shot. She broke the previous record of 46 that was set by Scia Maumausolo (1993-96).Â
Yanez tossed a five-hitter. She would strike out 11 and walked two to improve to 12-4 on the season. Sotomayor charted two of the six UC Davis hits.Â
GAME 2
UC Davis swept the doubleheader with a 8-0 victory in game two. UC Davis (20-12, 2-1 Big West) took advantage of a CSUN error to score an unearned run in the top of the first to begin the nightcap. The Aggies were kept of the scoreboard in the second when Babbitt, the Matadors' leftfielder, threw out Maddie Rojas at the plate for the third out.Â
Babbitt led off the CSUN third with a bunt single. Horvath was hit by a pitch to give the Matadors runners on first and second. Katie Kibby struck out Cauley. Stevens grounded into a fielder's choice that forced Babbitt at third. Jaime would fly out to conclude the inning.
The Aggies loaded the bases with one out in the fifth. Maddie Rojas recorded her third hit of the game with a single that drove in two runs. Sotomayor singled in the fourth run. Taylor Troost relieved Jillian James to face Alyse Rojas. Rojas hit a three-run home run to make it 7-0. Â Leon drove in the seventh run of the inning with a single. Kenedee Jamerson relieved Troost to and got the next two outs to retire UC Davis.Â
Alyse Rojas and Gomonet each posted two hits. Katie Kibby limited the Matadors to three hits.Â
"We thought what we did yesterday, would carry into today," said CSUN head coach Tairia Flowers. "Davis was able to separate, and we didn't. We didn't make adjustments at the plate and we hit too many fly ball and had too many strikeouts. When everything isn't working it rolls into the wrong direction. We didn't play our best softball and it showed."
The Matadors (16-24, 1-2 Big West) travel to No. 3/4 UCLA (31-2) Tuesday night. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.
