Pinch hitter Emily Olague's single in the bottom of the ninth for the University of San Diego gave the Toreros a CSUN 3-2 victory in the final game of the San Diego Classic Sunday afternoon.
SAN DIEGO—Pinch hitter Emily Olague's single in the bottom of the ninth for the University of San Diego gave the Toreros a CSUN 3-2 victory in the final game of the San Diego Classic Sunday afternoon.
Â
The Toreros took advantage of a CSUN passed ball and scored an unearned run in the bottom of the second to take the lead. Megan Stevens tied the score in the top of the third when she drove in Savannah Horvath with a ground out to second.
Â
A Matadors' error in the fourth would lead to one run and the lead back in the hands of the Torerors. Kenedee Jamerson tied the score with a one-out single that plated Stevens. The Matadors advanced a runner to second in the top of the seventh but could not push across the go-ahead run.
Â
CSUN would have runners on the corners in the eighth. San Diego withstood the rally to send the game to the bottom of the frame. With the international rule in place, USD placed Sara Sivlerya at second. Madison Casiano' grounded out to short as Sivlerya advanced to third. Lauren Kane popped out to short. Shelbi Evans worked the Jillian James count to 3-2 before flying out to center to send the game to the ninth.
Â
Jessica Alexander was placed on second to begin the CSUN ninth. She sped to third on a USD passed ball. Jessica LaPierre grounded out to third, keeping Alexander on the base. Mackenzie Babbitt popped out to short for the second out. Savannah Horvath struck out to conclude the inning. Pinch-runner Haylie Kyler went from second to third on a Katie Vetzros sacrifice bunt to get the ninth underway. This set the stage for the game winning hit for Olague. Â
Â
Eight different Matadors recorded a hit. Spence and Madison Casiano both had two hits for San Diego. James was the hard luck loser for CSUN. James allowed seven hits and struck out three as all two of the runs she allowed were unearned.
Â
"We had a tough loss today," said CSUN head coach Tairia Flowers. "We put ourselves in a position to win and we came up short. Time to go back to work."
The Matadors (8-13) host Providence College (3-8) Tuesday afternoon in a doubleheader that begins at 1 p.m. Coverage on the CSUN Sports Network presented by Dignity Health begins at 12:55 p.m. with Brandon Marcus on the call.
