RIVERSIDE, Calif.—CSUN earned a series victory over UC Riverside Sunday as the Matadors defeated the Highlanders 6-1.
Â
Savannah Horvath's 13th home run of the season with two outs in the top of the seventh gave the Matadors a 1-0 lead. Horvath's blast was the 48th of her career, moving her into second in Big West history. She is five away from Darian Tautalafua's (53, Long Beach State, 2013-16) Big West record for career home runs.
Â
With two outs in the top of the fifth, Kira Cauley and Jessica Alexander posted back-to-back hits. With Horvath coming to bat, UC Riverside went to the bullpen as Tyler Misfeldt relieved Hailey Dolcini. Horvath walked to load the bases. Journey Rojas hit a grounder to short. Hannah Rodriguez attempted to throw out Alexander at third. Alexander slid in safely as Cauley scored.
Â
Megan Stevens' infield single was deep enough in the hole at short to allow both Alexander and Horvath to score to make it 4-0. Haileigh Gonzalez increased the lead by one with a single up the middle to plate Rojas. Gator Rascon struck out to end the inning. Â
Â
Jenae Lockwood led off the UCR fifth with an infield single, the first off of CSUN starter Taylor Troost in the game. Stevens relieved Troost. Her first batter was Amanda Lynch. Lynch hit a shot towards short. Horvath reached in the air and grabbed the ball. She threw onto first to complete the double play. Stevens got Brittney Garcia to pop out to get the Matadors out of the UC Riverside fifth.
Stevens helped her own cause as she recorded an RBI double in the top of the seventh. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Emma Ramelot doubles. Rebecca Faulkner, a pinch-hitter, singled in Ramelot. Lynch would fly out to center for the final out of the game.
Â
In an addition to her home run, Horvath was 2-for-3 with a walk and two runs scored. Cauley went 2-for-4 with a run scored. Stevens was 2-for-4 and earned the save by throwing the final three innings. Troost and Stevens limited the Highlanders (26-17, 3-6 Big West) to four hits. Troost improved to 8-10 on the year.
Â
"I thought our pitchers did a really good job today," said CSUN head coach Tairia Flowers. "Our hitters made an adjustment early at the plate and went for line drives up the middle and it paid off."
Â
The Matadors (18-29, 3-6 Big West) travel to Cal Poly (19-19, 3-6 Big West) next weekend. Saturday's doubleheader gets underway at 1 p.m.
