4/21/2018 6:04:00 PM | Softball
SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif.—Cal Poly took a pair of close Big West Conference softball games from CSUN Saturday afternoon at Bob Jansen Field.Â
GAME 1
Cal Poly defeated the Matadors 5-2 in the opener. CSUN stranded a pair of runners on in the top of the first.Â
Chelsea Convissar reached on an error to lead off the bottom of the frame for the Mustangs. Noellah Ramos successfully sacrificed Convissar to second with a bunt to third. Stephanie Heyward doubled in Convissar for the game's opening run. Hailey Martin's infield single gave Cal Poly runners on the corners. With the CSUN infield in, Crimson Kaiser walked to load the bases. Shelby Jefferies struck out. Makenna Young lined out to center to keep the score at 1-0.Â
Three Cal Poly singles resulted in the Mustangs loading the bases with two outs in the second. With Martin at the plate, a Taylor Troost wild pitch allowed Amanda Sandoval to score. Martin walked to load the bases. Megan Stevens came in from right field to relieve Troost. Her first batter was Kaiser. Kaiser flew out to center to end the inning.Â
Mackenzie Babbitt walked on four Lindsey Chalmers pitches to lead off the CSUN third. Chalmers retired the next two Matadors to bring up Savannah Horvath. Babbitt stole second which resulted in Horvath being intentionally walked. Journey Rojas flew out to left to complete the inning. Â
Ramos reached on a one-out infield single in the fourth. She advanced to third on a Heyward single to right center. Martin singled in Ramos. Kaiser doubled in Heyward. Martin attempted to score on the play, but Horvath's cut-off throw from left caught Martin at the plate.Â
A two-base Cal Poly error allowed Horvath to reach second to begin the CSUN sixth. She moved up a base when Rojas grounded out to third. Stevens hit her ninth home run of the year, a blast to left to cut the Mustangs' lead in half.Â
Pinch-hitter Noa Yakir led off the Mustangs' sixth with an infield single. Heyward reached on an error attempting to sacrifice Ramos (who re-entered the game) to second. Martin's sac bunt attempt was fielded by Gator Rascon, the CSUN catcher. She threw down to Horvath covering third for a 2-6 putout. With Kaiser at the plate, a passed ball allowed both runners to advance a base. Kaiser's sacrifice fly scored a run to make it the final 5-2.Â
Heyward was 3-for-3 to lead Cal Poly. Ramos and Heyward both charted two hits for the Mustangs. Babbitt had two of the four CSUN hits. She went 2-for-2 with a walk.Â
GAME 2
Cal Poly scored three runs over the final two innings to defeat CSUN 3-2 in the nightcap.Â
Jessica Alexander put the Matadors into the lead with her second home run of the year, a solo shot, with two outs in the top of the third.Â
Jillian James, the CSUN starter, retired the first eight batters she faced before walking Sandoval with two outs in the bottom of the third. The Matadors' catcher, Raquel Jaime, threw out Sandoval attempting to steal to end the inning.Â
Heyward charted the first hit of the game for the Mustangs, a two-out triple to right center, in the fourth. Martin hit a tough grounder to Haileigh Gonzalez at second. Gonzalez scooped up the ball and threw to first to get the Matadors out of the frame.Â
Horvath singled to get the CSUN sixth underway. Rojas' sacrifice bunt pushed Horvath to second. Horvath went to third on a Shelby Jefferies wild pitch. Stevens ran the count to 3-2 before being hit by a pitch. Gonzalez attempted to bunt and took a strike as Stevens stole second. Gonzalez's liner to left was deep enough to score Horvath to make it 2-0.Â
Alejandra Garcia singled to begin the Cal Poly sixth. Sandoval struck out looking, the second of the game for James. Convissar doubled to center to drive in Wulff, the Mustangs' pinch-runner. Ramos singled to right to provide Cal Poly with runners on the corners. Heyward was intentionally walked to load the bases with one out. Martin's fly ball to left was caught by Rojas. The ball wasn't deep enough to move the runners. Kaiser ran the count to 3-2 before fouling off two consecutive pitches. On the eighth pitch of the at-bat, Kaiser walked to tie the game. Jeffries would strike out with the bases loaded, leaving the game tied.
Jaime singled up the middle to lead off the CSUN seventh. Jaymi Steward pinch-ran for Jaime as Kira Cauley came to the plate. Cauley's sacrifice bunt advanced Steward to second. Babbitt grounded out to third. Steward was able to take third on the play. Alexander popped out to Chalmers who came on in relief as the third Cal Poly pitcher of the game to start the seventh. Â
Young doubled to lead off the seventh. Garcia's sacrifice bunt attempt was popped up in the air and caught in foul territory by Jaime. Sandoval singled up the middle for runners on the corners. Kenedee Jamerson relieved James. Her first batter was Convissar who singled to right for the game winning RBI.Â
Alexander was 2-for-4 to pace the Matadors. Convissar went 2-for-4 with two runs batted in to lead the Mustangs.Â
"We had moments here and there in which we could have taken over," said CSUN head coach Tairia Flowers. "It was good softball from both teams. Both teams battled to the end. We have to find a way to win tomorrow."
CSUN (18-31, 3-7 Big West) and Cal Poly (21-19, 5-6 Big West) conclude the series Sunday. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
