CSUN Falls at San Diego State, 3-2

SAN DIEGO, Calif.---CSUN Baseball took a two-run lead into the seventh inning but a three-run San Diego State frame turned the tide of the contest as the Matadors fell 3-2 on Tuesday evening at Tony Gwynn Stadium. Andrew Weston tossed a season-high 4.2 shutout innings with four strikeouts and three hits allowed. On the hitting side, Trevor Casanova collected two of CSUN's three hits while Justin Toerner and Nolan Bumstead drove in runs.
Pitching dominated most of Tuesday's non-conference contest as Weston and SDSU's Jorge Fernandez took turns putting up zeroes on the scoreboard through the early portion of the game.Â
After retiring the side in order in the first inning, Weston pitched around a leadoff hit and an error on the infield to shut out the Aztecs in the second inning. Weston retired six in a row at one point and stranded four runners on the base paths through four innings.Â
Meanwhile, Fernandez surrendered a one-out double to Casanova in the first inning before setting down the next 10 Matador batters. In the fourth, the Matadors threatened to score after both Toerner and Bumstead reached on errors but Fernandez retired Riley Conlan to end the frame. Fernandez finished with four shutout innings on the mound as he surrendered just a hit.Â
Weston retired two of the first three batters in the fifth before being lifted from the game with a runner at first base. Jayson Newman came out of the bullpen and walked the first batter he faced before striking out David Hensley. Newman also worked a scoreless sixth inning, leaving a runner at third base.Â
The Matadors finally broke the scoreless tie in the sixth inning. Joey Cooper worked a leadoff walk and Casanova followed with a single to center field. Albee Weiss then collected a single of his own through the left side to load the bases with nobody out. Toerner took the first two pitches out of the strike zone before hitting a flyball deep enough to center field to score Cooper. Bumstead would pick up a sacrifice fly as well, plating Casanova that gave the Matadors a 2-0 lead.Â
The Aztecs fought back in the seventh inning as the first four batters reached against the Matador 'pen. Sean Ross put San Diego State on the scoreboard with an RBI double. Tei Vanderford entered the fray with two runners on base but Matt Rudick came up with an infield single to third. On the Rudick single, a costly error at third base allowed the tying run to touch home plate. Vanderford was able to rally by striking out two of the next three batters, however Dean Nevarez drew a bases loaded walk to bring Jacob Maekawa home with the go-ahead run.Â
After CSUN was retired in order in the eighth, Toerner reached with a leadoff walk in the ninth inning. Aztec reliever Casey Schmitt though set down the next two on fielder's choices before striking out Kevin Riley to nail down the save.Â
Vanderford finished with 1.1 shutout innings, striking out three batters while Blake Schriever retired the final two batters in a scoreless bottom of the eighth inning. Newman also worked 1.1 innings, allowing no runs on the day.Â
Casanova notched his team-best 17th multiple-hit game of the season including his 15th double. He has hit safely in seven-straight games.Â
The Matadors return to Big West action this weekend as they host UC Irvine in a three-game series. First pitch for the series opener is set for 3 p.m. on Friday afternoon.Â
