UNIVERSITY PLACE, Wash. - Playing in tough conditions Monday, Felix Mory is tied for the lead while the CSUN men's golf team is tied for third place at Seattle University Redhawk Invitational at Chambers Bay.
The Matadors posted a team round of 302 before matching the low second round total in the 17-team field with a 298 in the afternoon. CSUNÂ is currently tied for third with George Washington at 600, six shots behind UC Santa Barbara (594) and 17 shots back of San Francisco (583).
"It was brutal out there today, it was cold and windy," said CSUN Head Coach Jim Bracken. "The guys hit the ball really well today, we're continuing to show signs of life and playing better as a team. I was proud of the guys for grinding it out today. We want to move up or at the very least stay where we are tomorrow."
Senior Felix Mory, bidding for his first win of the season, shares the individual lead after carding consecutive rounds of 70 to finish Monday at two-under 140. Mory had six birdies in round one and an eagle and three birdies in round two. Mory heads into Tuesday's final round tied for San Francisco's Tim Widing who finished at 65-75.Â
"Felix was phenomenal today," said Bracken. "His distance control was amazing which was even more impressive in the conditions."
Trym Falch and Joey Varnam are tied for 22nd at nine-over 151. Varnam's two-round total matches his season-low as he carded three birdies on his way to a three-over 74 in the second round after an opening round 77. Falch posted rounds of 76-75 and is just one shot out of the top-20.
Also for the Matadors, Luis Calderon is tied for 73rd at 19-over 161 (79-82) while Michael Zhang is tied for 80th at 21-over 163 (84-79).
The final round gets underway with a shotgun start Tuesday morning at 8 a.m.
