Matadors Drop 8-4 Decision to UC Irvine
4/22/2018 4:52:00 PM | Baseball
For the 12th-straight Big West game, the Matadors jumped out to a lead as they plated a run in the bottom of the first. Joey Cooper led off the game with a single and he quickly moved up 90 feet on a stolen base. Weiss would deliver with an RBI single through the right side to plate a hustling Cooper. Justin Toerner followed with a single of his own but UCI's Trenton Denholm limited the damage by inducing a 1-6-3 double play to end the frame.Â
The Matadors seemingly threatened all game long against Anteater pitching. In eight of the nine innings, at least one Matador reached base safely, however CSUN was turned away in five of those frames. CSUN left 10 runners on the base paths on the afternoon as UC Irvine turned two double plays to end potential scoring threats.Â
Meanwhile, CSUN received a strong outing from Acosta. The junior right hander retired the first nine hitters of the day but his first hit allowed would square the game at 1-1. In the fourth, Jake Palmer reached on a leadoff walk and he later came around to score on a two-out hit from Nick Anderson. An inning later, Acosta retired the side in order for the fourth time as he struck out the first two batters and forced Christian Koss to ground out.Â
Still a 1-1 game in the sixth, Acosta hit the first batter of the frame before setting down the next two batters in a row. However, much like the fourth inning, the Anteaters picked up a timely two-out RBI single, this time from Ryan Fitzpatrick that gave UCI the lead. After Tei Vanderford relieved Acosta, Anderson drove the ball deep to center field but Toerner was able to make a thrilling catch at the wall to prevent an extra base hit.Â
UC Irvine added to its lead in the eighth inning against the Matador 'pen. Brendan Brooks hit a one-out RBI single to drive home Matt Reitano, who reached on an error to start the frame. Fitzpatrick followed with a ground-rule double and Anderson was intentionally walked to load the bases. Zickefoose connected with an RBI single before Cole Krueter hit the big blow, a grand slam, that put the Anteaters ahead 8-1.Â
Despite the large hill to climb, the Matadors kept on battling over the final two innings. In the eighth, Nolan Bumstead drew a leadoff walk and Kevin Riley stroked a double into left field to put two runners into scoring position. Riley Conlan stepped to the plate next and hit a sacrifice fly to bring CSUN a run closer.Â
In the bottom of the ninth, Trevor Casanova checked in with a one-out single before Weiss went yard with a two-run blast to left field. However, Dylan Riddle retired the final two batters of the game to nail down the win for the Anteaters.Â
For UCI, Denholm earned the victory by working five innings and allowing one earned run. On the hitting side, Brooks and Fitzpatrick finished with two hits apiece.Â
With his home run in the ninth, Weiss moved into a fourth-place tie with Eric Gillespie (1994-96) in the Matador record books with 37 career homers. Toerner also tied Marty Friedman (1972-73) for eighth place in school history with his 93rd career walk. Casanova extended his hitting streak to 10 games with his single in the ninth inning.Â
Up next, the Matadors return to Fresno State on Tuesday afternoon for a midweek contest at 6:05 p.m. CSUN will then head to Hawai'i for the start of a three-game Big West series next Friday (April 27).Â
