Matadors Defeat UC Riverside on Unusual Play in Extras
4/7/2018 9:55:00 PM | Baseball
RIVERSIDE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (14-16, 3-2 BWC) came from behind to defeat UC Riverside 3-2 in 11 innings to even the teams' weekend series on Saturday evening at the Plex. Trevor Casanova finished with three hits and an RBI while Justin Toerner also collected three hits of his own and scored the winning run in extra innings. Tei Vanderford earned his second victory of the season by working three shutout innings to go with three strikeouts.
After the teams fought to a standstill through 10 innings, the game would be decided on an unusual play in the top of the 11th inning. Justin Toerner began the frame with a single down the right field line. After Nolan Bumstead laid down a sacrifice bunt to move Toerner to second, Riley Conlan was intentionally walked. Kevin Riley followed with a grounder to short in what appeared to be a tailor made double play. Shortstop Colby Schultz recorded the out at second but the relay back to first was dropped by first baseman Ian Nowak, keeping the inning alive.Â
Moments later, with Brandon Bohning at the plate and runners at the corners, Riley broke from first base and was caught in a run down. Just as RIley appeared to be the third out at second, a bobbled throw from Cody Sporrer allowed Riley to reach second base and Toerner to score the go-ahead run. Credited with a stolen base, Toerner is the first Matador to steal home since Ryan Raslowsky accomplished the feat against Seattle University in Feb. 2015.Â
Vanderford would shut the door with a scoreless bottom of the 11th as he retired the side in order on 13 pitches.Â
Earlier in the game, the Matadors jumped in front in the top of the first. Joey Cooper walked to start the game and later reached second base on a wild pitch. Casanova broke the scoreless tie with an RBI single up the middle, plating Cooper.Â
Starter Isaiah Nunez did a strong job of protecting the 1-0 lead in the early innings. Nunez retired nine of the first 12 batters he faced including stranding runners at the corners in the third inning. In the fourth, Nunez induced a timely inning-ending 6-4-3 double play to keep the Matadors in front.Â
The Highlanders finally broke through in the fifth against CSUN pitching to take the lead. Nathan Webb hit a one-out single and Schultz struck for a two-out double to put runners at second and third base. Nunez was lifted from the game in favor of Theron Kay with Anthony Lepre at the plate. Lepre worked the count full before hitting a two-run single up the middle. The Highlanders later worked the bases loaded but Hayden Shenefield came out of the bullpen to finally strike out Matt Hardy to end the inning.Â
Shenefield gave the Matadors a boost out of the bullpen, tossing 3.1 shutout innings. Striking out six on the day, Shenefield struck out the side in the sixth inning and stranded three base runners over the seventh and eighth innings.Â
In the seventh, CSUN evened the game at 2-2 behind solid execution at the plate. Conlan walked to kick off the inning and Riley collected a single to move the tying run into scoring position. Bohning would move both runners up a base on a sacrifice bunt before Alvaro Rubalcaba picked up a sacrifice fly, scoring Conlan.Â
Vanderford entered the game in the bottom of the ninth and immediately ran into trouble. A four-pitch walk put Dylan Orick at first base. Schultz hit a grounder to the right side but an error on an attempted force out put two runners on base. Lepre then reached on an infield single to load the bases with nobody out. Unfazed, Vanderford went to work on the mound and struck out Dean Miller. The senior right hander then retired Connor Cannon on a pop up and Hardy on a fly out to right to end the frame.Â
In the 10th, Vanderford struck out two batters for his second consecutive shutout inning. He received strong defense in the inning as Casanova threw out Sporrer trying to steal second base for the final out.Â
Casanova recorded his team-leading 14th multiple-hit game on Saturday including his seventh in which he has tallied at least three hits. He also threw out his 10th base runner of the season in the top of the 10th inning.Â
The Matadors and Highlanders play the rubber game of the series on Sunday afternoon. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m.Â
