Matadors Claim Series with 6-1 Win Over UC Riverside
4/8/2018 6:37:00 PM | Baseball
RIVERSIDE, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (15-16, 4-2 BWC) took the rubber game from UC Riverside 6-1 en route to winning its second-straight Big West series on Sunday afternoon at the Plex. Trevor Casanova finished with two hits and two runs scored while Justin Toerner collected a pair of hits including his fifth home run this season. Matt Acosta notched his fourth win by tossing five shutout innings and striking out seven batters while scattering six hits. CSUN has won consecutive series to open Big West play for the first time since 2002 and the team has posted its best conference start (4-2) in five seasons.Â
Just as they have done the past two games, the Matadors struck first in the opening inning. Casanova got the Matadors' offense started with a one-out double down the left field line. After Casanova advanced to third base on a wild pitch, Albee Weiss drove in the game's first run on a grounder to short. Moments later, Toerner stepped to the plate, worked the count full and deposited a solo home run to right to put CSUN ahead 2-0.Â
In the second, the Matadors extended their lead due to strong base running. Riley Conlan worked a leadoff walk before stealing second base. On the play, Conlan moved up to third base on a wild pitch. Kevin Riley brought home Conlan on a RBI groundout up the middle. Brandon Bohning would help CSUN score again after reaching base on an infield single. Bohning stole second and third base before touching home plate on an Alvaro Rubalcaba RBI single. After Rubalcaba swiped the Matadors' fourth stolen base of the frame, Joey Cooper roped an RBI single to left field to push the lead to five runs.Â
On the mound, Acosta received strong defense behind him throughout his five innings of work. In the first, Acosta faced Anthony Lepre with runners at the corners and one out. Acosta struck out Lepre before Casanova threw out Colby Schultz at second base for an inning-ending double play.Â
In the second, Acosta again ran into trouble as Tony Gudino hit a two-out double down the left field line. Ian Nowak tried to score from first base on the play but the combination of Weiss, Rubalcaba Casanova caught Nowak at the plate for the third out of the frame.Â
Acosta found his stride on the mound beginning in the third. Working around a one-out walk, Acosta struck out the side in the inning. The junior right hander tossed a scoreless fourth before pitching around trouble in the fifth. The Highlanders picked up two hits in the fifth but a timely 4-6-3 double play wiped away UC Riverside's scoring opportunity.Â
The Matadors got back into the scoring column in the top of the fifth inning. All with one out, Casanova rifled a single to center then Weiss was hit by a pitch. Toerner loaded the bases with a single through the right side before Nolan Bumstead hit a sacrifice fly to plate Casanova.Â
CSUN's bullpen took over in the sixth and collectively pitched four solid innings. Jayson Newman tossed a clean sixth inning and Blake Schriever worked a shutout seventh before giving up a one-out home run to Nathan Webb in the eighth. Hayden Shenfield recorded the final two outs in the eighth, stranding a base runner. In the ninth, Cassius Hamm pitched around a one-out single by striking out the final two batters to end the ballgame.Â
Casanova notched his team-best 15th multiple-hit game of the season while Toerner collected his seventh. The duo capped off a strong weekend on Sunday as Toerner finished 6-for-14 (.429) with two runs scored and Cansanova went 5-for-15 (.333) with two runs scored and an RBI. Joey Cooper registered a team-best three RBI in the series and extended his on-base streak to 10-straight games.Â
The Matadors have won two-straight series to open Big West play for just the second time in program history. The last time the team accomplished the team was in 2002, which was also the Matadors' last Big West Championship season. In addition, CSUNÂ claimed its first series at UC Riverside since 2012.Â
CSUNÂ returns to action on Tuesday evening at Fresno State in a non-conference contest. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.Â
