NORTHRIDGE, Calif.—Cal State Fullerton defeated CSUN 5-3 in the final game of a Big West softball series Sunday afternoon.
A two-out CSUN error in the top of the first led to the first Cal State Fullerton (21-19, 6-0 Big West) run. The Titans sent nine batters to the plate in the top of the second, scoring four times.Â
Kira Cauley recorded the first hit off of Cal State Fullerton starter Sophie Frost, a double, to lead off the CSUN fourth. Â With one out, Raquel Jaime's single advanced Cauley to third. Jaime took second on Titans' error. Journey Rojas flew out to right, but the ball wasn't deep enough to move either runner up a base. Jocelin Soto struck out to end the inning.Â
Savannah Horvath singled to lead off the CSUN sixth. With one out, she moved to third on a Megan Stevens' ground out to Frost in the circle. Jaime walked to give the Matadors runners on the corners. Rojas singled up the middle to plate Horvath and get CSUN on the board. Pinch-hitter Ty Cueva ground out to second to end the inning.Â
Haileigh Gonzalez led off the bottom of the seventh with a single to right. Kenedee Jamerson grounded into a 6-4 fielder's choice. Jessica Alexander doubled to the gap in right as Horvath came to the plate. A wild pitch allowed Pudi Hernandez to score. A Horvath sacrifice fly drove in Alexander to make it 5-3. Cauley singled to bring up Stevens as the tying run. Stevens would ground out to second to end the game.
"I thought our team did a good job of battling until the end," said CSUN head coach Tairia Flowers. "We saw some good things and started hitting well. But we can't wait until the end of the game to try and take over."
Jamerson relieved Jillian James in the second and two hits over 5.1 innings of work. CSUN would end up outhitting the Titans 7-5. Cauley was 2-for-4 for the Matadors. Ari Williams went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two runs batted in.Â
The Matadors (16-28, 1-5 Big West) travel to UC Riverside (25-14, 2-3 Big West) for a three-game series that begins with a Saturday doubleheader. First pitch is set for 1 p.m.
