Matadors Edge USC 2-1 in Extras

LOS ANGELES, Calif.---CSUN Baseball (27-29) pushed across a run in the 10th inning to defeat USC 2-1 on Thursday evening at Dedeaux Field. Walker Armstrong collected his fifth quality start of the season as he went seven innings, allowing one unearned run on five hits. Out of the bullpen, Hayden Shenefield worked 2.1 shutout innings with four strikeouts to earn the win while Tei Vanderford nailed down his first career save.
In a game where runs were hard to come by, Armstrong and Kyle Hurt battled in an old fashioned pitcher's duel on Thursday.Â
Hurt set down the Matadors in order in the first but CSUN manufactured a run in the second inning to take a 1-0 lead. Nolan Bumstead roped a double to lead off the second, and he later advanced to third base on a Joey Cooper groundout. Kyle Barret then brought home Bumstead on a sacrifice fly to right.Â
Despite retiring seven of the first eight batters in the game, Armstrong surrendered an unearned a run in the bottom of the second. Stephen Dubb drew a leadoff walk before advancing to second base on a passed ball. After a groundout moved Dubb to third, Brandon Perez drove in the tying run on a grounder to second base.Â
The Trojans threatened in the third inning after Kaleb Murphy singled, and Chase Bushor and Lars Nootbaar worked walks to load the bases with two outs. However, Armstrong forced Dubb to hit into a fielder's choice to end the frame.Â
Armstrong pitched around a fielding error to start the fourth and a one-out hit in the fifth to keep the game tied up at 1-1.Â
In the sixth inning, Armstrong received quality defense behind him to prevent a Trojan rally. Alex Hull made a highlight reel catch in left center off a liner from Dubb with a runner at first base. Later in the sixth, Nootbaar tried to take third base on a single from Dillon Paulson but he was thrown out at third base by Hull. Armstrong then struck out Perez to end the frame.Â
Armstrong finished off his stay on the mound with a shutout seventh as he pitched around a two-out double from Murphy.Â
On the flip side, Hurt kept the Matadors off balanced at the plate throughout his 7.1 innings of work. Allowing one hit on the evening, Hurt retiried 18 of 20 batters at one point before running into trouble in the eighth. Jayson Newman and Ben Martz drew one-out walks in the eighth inning, signaling the end of the night for Hurt. John Beller entered the fray and retired Brandon Bohning and Justin Toerner to stop the rally.Â
Relieving Armstrong, Shenefield helped send the game into extras with spotless eighth and ninth innings.Â
In the 10th, Cooper led off the inning with a single through the right side. After Barret laid down a sacrifice bunt, Newman grounded out to first base, moving Cooper up to third base. Up next, Martz drew a walk and hustled up to first base but took a wide turn and put himself in a rundown. Martz dove back to first base but an errant throw hit his helmet. The ball bounced away from the defense, allowing Cooper to race home with the go-ahead run.Â
The Matador 'pen took advantage of the unsual play in the 10th to seal the win in the bottom half of the frame. Shenefield struck out Daniel Edson before walking Murphy. Vanderford came out of the bullpen and recorded the second out on a Blake Sabol popup. After Bushor reached on a bunt single, Vanderford shut the door with a strikeout of Nootbar.Â
In possibly his final appearance of season, Armstrong (3-4) improved his ERA to 3.39 in 93.0 innings of work. Armstrong also posted two complete games as he emerged as the team's Friday night starter throughout the final three months of the campaign.Â
The Matadors go for the series win over the Trojans on Friday evening. First pitch is slated for 6 p.m.Â
